How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Keyboard Disappears When Texting
Problem: Hi there, After the last update on my Samsung Note 9, I’ve noticed that when I’m texting someone, it will stop letting me text and then the keyboard will disappear, but then when I hit the space to text again, it reappears and let’s me do it. But, when I’m texting now it just cuts me off and I have to keep hitting a space to finish my sentence. I don’t know what’s wrong with it or how to fix it. I’ve never had this problem before the update. Also when I’m texting, it will add in random letters that are not supposed to be there. I feel like trying to explain this is a lot harder than it has to be. Wish there was a way I could show you.
Solution: Before troubleshooting this issue it’s always best to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.
Perform a soft reset
The first thing you will need to do in this case is a soft reset which should fix minor software related glitches such as this.
- Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
- Wait as the device restarts.
Once this is done try to check if the issue still occurs.
Clear the cache and data of the Keyboard app
There are cases when the cached data of the keyboard app can become corrupted which can result in this problem.
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Apps.
- Tap the Keyboard application in the default list.
- To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
- Tap Storage > CLEAR CACHE > CLEAR DATA > DELETE
Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode
There are cases when a third party app you downloaded will cause issues on the phone when they are installed. To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
- When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.
In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Wipe the cache partition of the phone
There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.
- Turn off the phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
- An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
- Press Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Perform a factory reset
In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by a software glitch. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.
- Turn off the phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
