How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Cannot See Files On MicroSD Card

Problem:  I want to upgrade my 64 gig Micro SD to a new 256 gig card. I purchased a Samsung 256 gig card. I have copied my current 64 gig card onto a portable hard drive. I then tried copying the files back to the new SD card. The phone did not see all the files. I then put the original 64 gig card into a SD adapter and the new 256 gig card into another adapter and copied the files from the smaller one to the larger one. I can see the files on the new card with my PC. When I installed the new 256 gig back into my phone, the files are not recognized on my note 9. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

The best way to transfer data from your old microSD card to the new one is by the help of your computer. Remove the old card from your phone then using a card reader copy its contents to a folder in your computer. Insert the new microSD card to your phone then format it.

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > Device maintenance.
  • Tap Storage > Menu > Storage settings.
  • Tap SD card > Format  > FORMAT.
  • Wait for the SD card to be formatted, then tap DONE

Remove the new microSD card from your phone then connect it to your computer using a card reader. Copy the contents of the old card that is stored in your computer to the new card.

Check if your phone can detect the files. In case the issue still persists then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a soft reset

The first troubleshooting step that you will need to do is a soft reset. This will refresh the phone software and usually fixes minor software glitches.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Once the phone starts try to check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded on your phone can cause issues. To check if a third party app is causing this problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your phone will store cached data of apps in a dedicated partition in its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

In case the issue still persists after the reset then try using a different 256GB microSD card as the problem could be caused by the card that you are using.
