How to fix Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with Nova Launcher that keeps crashing (easy steps)

Nova Launcher is one of the most popular launchers being used by smartphones owners today and I personally use it on my phones as well. The thing is, some of our readers that own the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 have reported that the app keeps on crashing on their phones. Others said that they’re getting the error “Unfortunately, Nova Launcher has stopped” while some said that when they press or tap the home button, their phones freezes for a few seconds or stutters and gets the touchwiz launcher instead of Nova.

I haven’t encountered similar issues ever since I started using this launcher so I assume it’s just a minor problem with Nova or the phone. We’re talking of a third-party launcher here so the problem can be fixed. In fact, you can immediately get rid of the problem by uninstalling the app but the purpose of this troubleshooting guide is to fix the problem so that you can continue using the launcher on your phone and not to remove it. If you’re one of the owners of this device and are currently bugged by a similar issue, continue reading as this post may help you one way or another.

The course of our troubleshooting will be to verify if it’s not just a minor glitch in the app or the firmware. We will try to be thorough in troubleshooting your phone and app so we’ll do the basic troubleshooting and then we’ll move on to other solutions if one method fails. That said, here’s what I suggest you do about this problem:

First solution: Reboot your Note 8

If this is the first time that the problem showed or manifested, a reboot is your most viable option because it could be just a minor glitch in the system or the app itself. It’s a very simple procedure but very effective in dealing with minor issues. If this doesn’t help, however, then try doing the forced reboot instead:

  • Press and hold the volume down button and the power key at the same time for 10 seconds or more.

Your Note 8 will reboot and if the problem was indeed due to a minor issue, then you won’t get the error about Nova Launcher that stopped or the phone may now work smoothly whenever you press or tap the home key.

Second solution: Reset Nova Launcher

By reset I mean clear its cache and data. If this problem is with the launcher only, then this procedure is more than enough to fix it. Take note however, that the app will be brought back to its default settings after doing this and your settings or preferences will be deleted.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Find and tap Nova Launcher.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  6. Tap Clear cache.

You may reboot your phone after doing this to refresh its memory and then trigger Nova Launcher by tapping the Home button. If the issue still persists after this, then move on to the next method.

Third solution: Uninstall Nova Launcher and then reinstall it

Usually, I would suggest updating the app in question to rule out the possibility that this is just a compatibility issue with the firmware. In this case, however, I suggest you uninstall Nova Launcher to remove all its associations with other apps and services and then download and reinstall it to make sure you have the latest version of the app.

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Nova Launcher.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL.
  6. Review the notification then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Reboot your phone to refresh it’s memory and other connections.

Now, to make sure you have the latest version of the app in your phone, download a fresh copy from the Play Store and install it.

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. Tap Play Store.
  3. Type ‘nova launcher’ in the search box.
  4. Select Nova Launcher then tap Install.
  5. To continue, review the required app permissions then tap Accept.

The first three solutions should be enough to fix a minor problem like this.
