How To Fix PS4 Freezing Lagging Issue

Before performing the recommended troubleshooting steps for this particular problem it’s best to restart your PS4 console first so as to refresh the system. This most of the common issues caused by a software glitch.
There are several reasons why the PS4 will freeze or lag and these could be caused by a hardware or software issue. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix the problem.

  1. Check the hard drive.

One of the factors that can cause this problem is an issue with the hard drive. What you can do right now is to check if the hard drive is securely attached to the PS4 and check if it for any signs of physical damage. Here's how:
-Turn off the PS4 completely by pressing the power button for at least 7 seconds till you hear two beeps.
-Disconnect the power cable from the back of the console.
-Slide the Hard Disk Drive bay cover out and away towards the left of the system to remove it.
-Check the hard drive to make sure it’s properly seated and properly screwed to the board.
-If you have a spare hard drive try using this. Take note that you will have to install a new system software on this new drive.
Check if the PS4 freezing lagging issue still occurs.

  2. Free up disk space.

If your hard drive is running out of disk space then there’s a possibility that this problem will occur. What you should do is to make sure that the hard drive has sufficient free space available.
-From the main screen, go to Settings > System Storage Management and the categories: Applications, Capture Gallery, Application Saved Data, Themes.
-Select the content you want to delete.
-Press the OPTIONS button on the controller and then select Delete.
-If you experienced the issue while playing a game then you should delete saved data as this could contain corrupted data.
-Check if the PS4 freezing lagging issue still occurs.

  3. Rebuild the PS4 database.

The PS4 database will usually get corrupted as more and more data is stored. If this is what’s causing the problem then you should try rebuilding it. Here's how:
-Turn off the PS4 by holding the power button for at least seven seconds. You will hear two beeps indicating it’s completely off.
-Boot into Safe Mode by pressing and holding the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear a second beep.
-Connect your DualShock 4 controller via a USB cable to the PS4.
-Scroll down and select the Rebuild Database – This scans the drive and creates a new database of all content.
-Check if the PS4 freezing lagging issue still occurs.

  4. Manually update the PS4.

If your PS4 is running on an outdated software version then this could be the reason why you are experiencing this problem. Try to check for any available updates and if there is one then I suggest you install it. Here's how:
-You will need a USB stick with at least 400 MB free space. The USB must be wiped and then create a folder called PS4 with a subfolder called UPDATE.
-Download the latest PS4 update from and copy it over to the UPDATE folder on your flash drive.
-Shutdown the console, and then insert the USB stick into one of the PS4’s forward-facing USB ports.
-Hold the power button for at least 7 seconds to boot into Safe Mode.
-In Safe Mode, select the third option which is “Update System Software” and follow the directions with from there.
Check if the PS4 freezing lagging issue still occurs.

  5. Check your internet connection.

If you are experiencing the problem while playing an online game then there’s a chance that your internet connection is causing the problem. To fix this you should try the following:
-Use a wired connection over Wi-Fi if possible
-Use a Wi-Fi signal booster if the signal is very weak or move the console closer to the router
    -Use a Faster DNS

Try opening router ports

  1. If you are able to setup port forwarding on your modem or router then I suggest that you follow these settings that are optimized for the PS4:
  2. Go to your router’s browser settings (Typically with a browser.
  3. Look for “port forwarding” settings
  4. Select the IP address of your PS4. It can be found Settings > Network > View Connection Status on your PS4.
  5. Create UDP and TCP port forwarding rules for both for the following numbers: 80, 443, 1935, 3478, 3479, 3480.
  6. Use NAT Type 2 instead of 1.
  7. Check if the PS4 freezing lagging issue still occurs.
