How To Fix LG G7 ThinQ Not Reading MicroSD Card
Problem: My LG G7 ThinQ phone suddenly quit reading my micro SD card (SanDisk Ultra Plus 128GB). I mostly have music and photos on the card, but cannot access them. The apps do not even see them. When I open the file manager it correctly shows the Internal Storage (128GB) but says the SD card is not inserted. I am able to read and access the card on my PC when I insert it into an SD Adapter. I have removed and reinstalled the card multiple times. The phone does not have a removable battery, so I followed your directions to simulate it (hold power and volume down button/Power down) both with and without the card installed. None of these attempts have worked. The last system update was December 19, 2018. This issue began January 29, 2019. Do you have any other suggestions to fix this issue?
Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.
The first thing you will want to do in this case is to verify if the card is working by having another device read it. If you have a computer then use a card reader to connect your card to it. If it can’t be read then it is most likely corrupted already and needs to be replaced with a new one.
In case it can be read then I suggest that you backup the contents of the card by copying to your computer. Once this is done format the card using the FAT32 partition then insert it back to your phone.
In case the issue still persists then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.
Perform a Soft Reset
The first thing you will need to do whenever your phone becomes unresponsive is to do a soft reset which should also work in this case as this will refresh your phone software and will usually fix most minor software glitches. The soft reset is done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release. When the phone turns on check if the issue still occurs.
Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode
Sometimes the problem can be caused by an app that you recently downloaded You can check if this is what’s causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.
- With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
- In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
- When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
- After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
If the phone can read the microSD card in this mode then the problem could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Wipe the cache partition of the phone
Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
- When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
- Use the Volume down button to select Wipe Cache .
- Press the Power button to confirm.
- Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
- Allow several minutes for the process to complete.
Check if the phone can read the microSD card.
Perform a factory reset
One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
- When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
- ‘Factory data reset’ appears.
- Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
- Press the Power button to confirm.
- Erase all user data and restore default settings’ appears.
- Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
- Press the Power button to reset the device.
If the above steps fails to fix the problem then try using a new microSD card on the device. If the issue still remains then you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
