How To Fix LG G7 ThinQ Bluetooth Keeps Disconnecting From Smartwatch

Problem: I have a LG7 ThinQ with service from T-Mobile and a Amazfit Bip smartwatch.  I have consistent connectivity issues. The watch disconnects with my home which is 1100 sqt ft.  This is certainly within the 100 meter distance suggested by LG. I’ve tried rebooting, reinstalling the Mi Fit app, pairing and unpairing the watch.  Stopping the Bluetooth and Bluetooth MIDI services and clearing the data. Now the Bip appears to connect, but doesn’t show on the Bluetooth screen. I cannot select the Bip as a trusted device to keep the phone unlocked and the Bluetooth MIDI service no longer appears active.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

The first thing you will need to do is to forget the Bluetooth connection of your phone and the smartwatch. You should also reset the Bluetooth connection of the smartwatch ( refer to its manual on how to do this).

  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Bluetooth.
  • Tap the Options icon next to the device you want to unpair.
  • Tap Unpair.
  • The pairing has been removed.

Pair the phone and the smartwatch:

  • Go to the Home screen.
  • Scroll to the right.
  • Choose Settings.
  • Choose Bluetooth.
  • If this screen appears, choose an option, in this case CLOSE.
  • If this screen does not appear, go to the next step.
  • Turn on Bluetooth.
  • If one or more Bluetooth devices are available within the LG G7 ThinQ™’s range, they will be listed.
  • Choose the device that you want the LG G7 ThinQ to connect to. If the device is not listed, make sure that Bluetooth has been turned on the other device and that it is within range of the phone.
  • If a Bluetooth pairing request screen appears, verify the code and choose PAIR.
  • The pairing has been completed.

In case the issue still persists then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Reset Network Settings

The first thing you will want to do in this case is to reset the network settings of the phone. This will reset the data connections of the phone back to its original out of the box condition. The following will apply when you perform this step.

  • Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.
  • Stored tethered connections will be deleted.
  • Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted.
  • Background data sync settings will be turned on.
  • Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.
  • Network selection mode will be set to automatic.
  • Preferred mobile network type will be set to best.

To perform this step

  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset > Network settings reset > RESET SETTINGS > Reset Settings.
  • A ‘Network settings have been reset’ message briefly flashes to indicate the reset is complete.

Once this is done pair your phone and the smartwatch then check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

When the phone is started in Safe Mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. This makes it easier to check if a downloaded app is causing the problem.

  • Make sure that the phone is powered off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button until the System recovery screen displays then release both buttons.
  • Select Safe mode. Use the Volume buttons to highlight the option and the Power button to select.
  • The device starts up with ‘Safe mode’ displayed in the lower-left.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are instances when the phone’s cached data can get corrupted and when this happens certain issues can occur on the device. To eliminate this possibility you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before performing this step as it will be deleted in the process.

Factory reset from the settings menu

  • From the Home screen go to Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE > Delete all > RESET

Factory reset using the hardware keys

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

If the issue still persists even after a factory reset then you should try checking if the issue occurs when the phone connects to a different smartwatch to eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by your smartwatch.
