How to Fix iPhone 17 Pro Unable to Complete Initial Setup
Some iPhone 17 Pro owners are having trouble completing the initial device setup, with the process stalling during activation or data transfer. The following steps can help get past common setup roadblocks.
Fix #1: Force Restart and Retry Setup
If the iPhone 17 Pro is stuck during initial setup, a force restart often gets it past the hang.
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- When the setup screen returns, try again.
Fix #2: Skip Data Transfer and Set Up as New
Data transfers from an older iPhone can stall or fail due to incompatible backup data. Setting up as new and restoring later avoids this.
- During setup, select Don’t Transfer Apps & Data.
- Complete the setup process.
- After setup, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings and restore from iCloud backup if needed.
Fix #3: Connect to a Different Wi-Fi Network
The setup process requires a stable internet connection. If your current network is slow or blocking Apple’s activation servers, try a different one.
Fix #4: Set Up Using a Computer
If the on-device setup keeps failing, set up the iPhone 17 Pro using a Mac or PC.
- Connect the phone to a Mac or PC via USB.
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC).
- Follow the on-screen prompts to activate and set up the device.
Fix #5: Wait and Retry
Apple’s activation servers can get overwhelmed during new product launches. If setup fails with a server error, wait 30 minutes and try again.
Fix #6: Restore via Recovery Mode
If the phone is completely stuck and will not respond, a recovery mode restore can fix it.
- Connect to a computer and open Finder or iTunes.
- Force restart the phone and keep holding the Side button until the recovery screen appears.
- Click Restore to reinstall iOS from scratch.
