How to Fix iPhone 17 Overheating and Poor Battery Life

Many iPhone 17 users are experiencing rapid battery drain, sometimes losing significant charge in just a few hours of screen time. These fixes target the most common software-related causes of excessive battery consumption.

Fix #1: Check Battery Usage by App

One misbehaving app can drain the iPhone 17 battery rapidly. Identifying the culprit is the first step.

  1. Go to Settings > Battery.
  2. Review the list under Battery Usage by App.
  3. If any app shows unusually high usage (especially background activity), force close it or delete and reinstall it.

Fix #2: Force Restart

A force restart clears stuck processes that may be consuming power in the background.

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Fix #3: Disable Background App Refresh for Non-Essential Apps

Background App Refresh allows apps to update content even when you are not using them, which consumes battery.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  2. Turn off Background App Refresh for apps that do not need real-time updates.

Fix #4: Turn Off Always-On Display

The always-on display uses power continuously. Disabling it can noticeably improve battery life.

  1. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
  2. Turn off Always On Display.

Fix #5: Reduce Location Services Usage

Apps that constantly use GPS drain the battery quickly.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Set apps to While Using instead of Always.

Fix #6: Update iOS

Battery drain after an update is common and Apple typically releases a follow-up patch. Check for the latest version.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Install any available update.

Fix #7: Reset All Settings

If the drain started after an update, corrupted settings may be the cause. This resets all settings to defaults without erasing data.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Reset > Reset All Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode and confirm.
