How to Fix iPhone 17 Frozen During iOS Update
Some iPhone 17 owners are experiencing software issues including freezing, crashes, boot problems, and unexpected behavior after updates. The following steps can resolve most software-related issues.
Fix #1: Force Restart
Most software freezes, crashes, and boot issues on the iPhone 17 can be resolved with a force restart.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Fix #2: Update iOS
Many software issues are addressed in iOS updates. Check if a newer version is available.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update.
Fix #3: Free Up Storage
Low storage can cause apps to crash, the system to lag, and updates to fail.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review recommendations and delete unused apps, old photos, or large files.
- Aim for at least 5-10 GB of free space.
Fix #4: Reset All Settings
Corrupted settings from a bad update can cause system-wide instability. This reset does not erase your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset All Settings.
Fix #5: Restore via Recovery Mode
If the phone is stuck on the Apple logo, frozen during an update, or will not boot, a recovery mode restore can fix it.
- Connect the iPhone 17 to a Mac or PC with a USB cable.
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC).
- Force restart the phone (Volume Up, Volume Down, hold Side button) but keep holding the Side button past the Apple logo until the recovery mode screen appears.
- Click Update first to try fixing without erasing. If that fails, click Restore.
Fix #6: Factory Reset
If the phone boots but behaves erratically, a full erase and clean setup can eliminate lingering software corruption.
- Back up your data first.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
