App crashes are pretty common issues and you may encounter some of your apps to stop working from time to time. It’s because problems like this maybe just a result of some other problems. The fact is if the firmware has an issue especially if your phone is running out of RAM or storage, some services and apps must give way so that new apps and services that are used by the owners can run.

Instagram is a third-party app and if it has some issues, you can actually fix the problem immediately by uninstalling it. However, that’s not really a solution, is it? A real solution is to get rid of the problem so that you may continue using the app and that’s what we need to do in this guide. With all that being said, here’s what I suggest you do about this problem:

First solution: Restart your Galaxy S9

Just before doing anything else on your phone, you must try rebooting it if you haven’t done it already. App crashes may also be a sign of a minor firmware glitch or issue and there’s no better way to fix it than to restart your phone. So, hit that power key and reboot it and after which, open Instagram to find out if it still crashes or not. If it still closes on its own or shows the error message, try doing the forced reboot instead:

  • Press and hold both the volume down and power keys simultaneously for 10 seconds or until the device restarts.

This procedure simulates battery disconnect and refreshes your phone’s memory by reloading all apps, services and core functions. If the problem continues even after doing this, then move on to the next procedure.

Second solution: Reset Instagram

By reset, I mean clear the app’s cache and data to bring it back to its default settings or configuration. If the problem is with the app, then this procedure is more than enough to fix it. Don’t worry, you won’t lose any of your important files if you did this:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Instagram.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  7. Tap Cached data.
  8. Tap CLEAR.

After this, try to open the app to see if it still crashes and if it still does, you have to do the next solution as it might be a compatibility issue.

Third solution: Uninstall Instagram and then reinstall it

Another possibility why the app crashes is due to a compatibility issue between the app itself and the firmware. But instead of just updating the application, I suggest you uninstall it from your phone so that all its associations with the system and other apps will be removed. This is how you do that:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Instagram.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL.
  6. Review the notification then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Reboot your phone to refresh it’s memory and other connections.

Now, to make sure you have the latest version of the app in your phone, download a fresh copy from the Play Store and install it.

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. Tap Play Store.
  3. Type ‘instagram’ in the search box.
  4. Select Instagram then tap Install.
  5. To continue, review the required app permissions then tap Accept.

The first three solutions should be enough to fix a minor problem like this. However, if by any chance the issue continues to bug you and you badly need to use the app, then a reset would be worth it.

Fourth solution: Perform the Master reset

This is the ultimate solution to most of app-related problems. You only have to do this if the previous methods haven’t fixed the issue and that using Instagram is important to you. But before doing the reset, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted. After which, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
