When a pre-installed app starts to keep crashing on your phone, like some Samsung Galaxy S9 owners complained about, then it is almost certain that the problem is with the firmware or, at least, the system has something to do with it. Gmail is one of those apps that come pre-installed on any Android device and needless to say, it’s embedded in the firmware. There are cases wherein you can troubleshoot the app but for most cases when a problem occurs to one of those apps, you have to troubleshoot the firmware.
In this post, I will walk you through on how to troubleshoot your Galaxy S9 with Gmail app that keeps crashing. Most of the time when an app crashes, it would just force close on its own shortly after you’ve opened it. There are also cases where you can use it for a few minutes before it closes on its own. But the most obvious sign that would tell you immediately that an app crashes is when you get an error that, in this case, says “Unfortunately, Gmail has stopped.”

How to fix Gmail that keeps crashing on Galaxy S9
First off, this kind of problem is common to third-party apps and don’t worry, it’s a minor issue and I’m certain you can fix it on your own by doing the following solutions.
First solution: Reboot your phone
If it’s the first time Gmail crashed, it’s probably just a glitch in the firmware or the app. That’s why it’s imperative you reboot your phone before doing anything more complicated. Hit that power key and restart your phone and then try opening Gmail to know if it would still crash after the restart. If it does, try doing the Forced Restart which will refresh your phone’s memory and reloads all apps, services and core functions.
- Press and hold the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more.
If Gmail still crashes after this, then it’s time to proceed to our proper troubleshooting.

Second solution: Reset Gmail
By this I mean clear the cache and data of Gmail which will reset it back to its default settings. Only your emails that have been downloaded to your phone as well as the files you may have downloaded from your emails will be deleted and nothing else. After this and the problem gets fixed, you can access your emails again by signing into your Gmail account.
- From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
- From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
- Tap App Manager.
- Locate then tap Gmail.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap CLEAR CACHE.
- Tap Cached data.
- Tap CLEAR.
- Reboot your phone to refresh its memory.
After this procedure, open Gmail to find out if the app still crashes because if it does, you may have to proceed to troubleshooting the firmware.
Third solution: Wipe cache partition
The Android system as well as the firmware used in your Galaxy S9 creates caches for every app and function. They will make those apps run smoothly after they’re used for the first time. While those files are small and temporary, when corrupted, they would also caused so much trouble and this is just one of those things. You don’t have access to individual caches so you really have to delete them all at once and you can do that by wiping off the cache partition where they’re saved and this is how you do that:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
- An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
- Press Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Open Gmail once the phone has finished restarting to know if the problem still occurs and if it does, then you have to reset your phone.
Fourth solution: Master reset
Pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled or removed from your phone like the third-party apps that’s why you really have to go after the firmware if this problem continues to bug you even after doing the first three procedures.
However, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted during entire process and you may not be able to retrieve them after that. After the backup, disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your Google account from your phone so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. Once everything is ready, follow these steps to reset your phone:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
