How to fix Black Screen of Death on Galaxy Note 8

Most of the time the black screen of death is just a result of a firmware crash unless your phone suffered a drop that left some scratches on the outside or got left submerged in water for a  long time. If you think this problem is with the hardware, you should immediately bring the phone the shop so that a technician can check it for you. However, if the device turned off on its own without apparent reason or cause, then there are a couple of things you can do about it:

Perform the Forced Reboot procedure

More often than not, this is all you need to do to make your phone respond or boot up again. It is a very effective solution to devices that turned off and  won’t turn back on or those that got hit by firmware crashes. If you’re familiar with the battery pull, then this is the equivalent of that only that in this case, you can’t pull the battery out. To do this, press and hold both the volume down and power keys simultaneously for 10 seconds or more. Your device may boot up normally after doing this.

If your Galaxy Note 8 is still not responding after this, then try doing the following…

  1. Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t release it.
  2. Now, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

This is actually the same as the first procedure only that we’re making sure this time that you press and hold the power key after the volume down because if you do it otherwise, it won’t give you similar results.

However, after doing this and your Galaxy Note8 is still not responding, then move on to the next procedure.

Charge your Note 8 and do the Forced Restart

Basically, a drained battery is not really a problem. That is if the phone responds when it’s connected to the charger. But the thing is that if you let your phone run out of battery before charging it, there’s a tendency that some hardware components as well as services will crash as they may not be properly shut down. In this case, you will be dealing with two minor issues that both result to an unresponsive phone–drained battery and firmware crash.

Yes, a firmware crash can be fixed by a forced reboot but if there’s no battery left, your phone would still not respond when you try to turn it on. And since the firmware has crashed, it would  not respond when it’s connected to its charger. To address this, here’s what you should do…

  1. Connect the original wired charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Using the original data cable, connect your Note 8 to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether it responds or not, leave it connected to the charger for at least 10 minutes.
  4. After which, perform the forced reboot procedure by pressing and holding the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more.

If the problem is the same as we thought, then your Note 8 should already be booting up by now but if it still not, then it’s time to bring it to the shop as it could be an issue with the hardware.
