How to fix an LG V35 ThinQ smartphone that keeps freezing or lagging [Troubleshooting Guide]

Performance issues in smartphones as manifested by freezing and lagging symptoms are usually occurring from wear-and-tear, usually after several months or years of regular use. But there are some instances when the same symptoms surface earlier than expected even on powerful devices.

While this may sound bizarre, there are many factors that can make this possible and majority of which are software-related. This means that such problems are fixable. Among the usual triggers are errant apps, data corruption, faulty updates, and memory issues. Highlighted below are simple workarounds that are used to deal with a similar issue seen on the new LG V35 ThinQ smartphone.

First solution: End all background apps then reboot your phone.

As mentioned earlier, errant apps will usually trigger a device to freeze or lag. Oftentimes, the main culprits are background apps. These are apps you recently opened but not closed, thus they remain running in the background. When any of these apps gets corrupted and crashed, there is a tendency that the entire system gets affected. And this is when adverse symptoms including freezes and lags instigate. To clear this out, follow these steps to end all background apps on your LG V35 ThinQ smartphone:

  1. Tap the Recent Apps key to access recently opened apps.
  2. Tap the X icon on an app to end individual apps.
  3. Tap Clear All to close all apps at once.

Once you’re done ending all background apps, restart or soft reset your LG V35 ThinQ using any of these methods:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons together for at least 8 seconds until the phone restarts.
  2. Press and hold the Power/Lock button and then select Restart from the menu options.

A soft reset effectively clears random software glitches that might have inflicted pertinent symptoms. It also refreshes the phone’s internal memory and operating system for smoother better and performance.

Second solution: Enable Safe Mode and diagnose apps.

Aside from background apps, third-party apps that have gone rogue can also cause the same symptoms. The easiest way to determine if the problem is attributed to an errant third-party application, try to boot your phone in safe mode. Only the stock apps or pre-installed apps are permitted to run in safe mode, thus it will be easier for you to determine whether or not a third-party app is to blame. Here’s how to restart your LG V35 ThinQ in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold down the Power button for a few seconds until the Power off icon appears.
  2. Touch and rest the Power off icon until the Restart in Safe Mode prompt appears.
  3. Tap OK then wait until the phone reboots in safe mode.

Alternatively, you can enter safe mode using the physical buttons. Here’s how:

  1. Turn the phone off by pressing the Power button and then select Power off.
  2. Then turn the phone on while pressing and holding the Volume Down button.

When the phone boots up, you should see a Safe Mode label at the bottom corner of the screen. This is an indication that the phone is already running in safe mode.

Now, use your device as you normally while in safe mode and see if the symptoms occur. If your phone doesn’t freeze or lag while in safe mode, then it denotes that a third-party app is the trigger. In this case, you will need to identify which from your downloaded apps is the culprit. You may have to delete apps individually starting from your most recent download. Don’t forget to test your device after deleting an app to see if the problem is already fixed or not.

If your phone is still lagging and freezing even when it’s running safe mode, then there’s an issue with the phone system or worst, you could be dealing with a faulty hardware.

Third solution: Update phone software to the latest version available.

Software updates also offer bug fixes, and therefore a potential solution if the problem is inflicted by malware and bugs. To check for new firmware version for your LG V35 ThinQ, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap on the General tab.
  3. Tap Update Center.
  4. Tap Software Update.
  5. Then tap the option to Check for Updates.

A notification will show up if an update is available. Before you download and install the update, make sure your phone is connected to the Internet and has enough memory and battery life. Then follow the onscreen instructions to instigate downloading and installation of the new software.

Fourth solution: Wipe cache partition your LG V35 ThinQ.

Corrupted cached files from system folders on your device can also affect its overall performance with recurring symptoms of freezes and lags. This is when wipe cache partition serves its purpose. Doing so will clear all temporary data that are stored as cache in the system partition, including those that are corrupted. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  3. Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  4. Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  5. Tap on Free up space.
  6. Tap on Temporary files & raw files.
  7. Select any from the given options including Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, or Raw files from camera
  8. Tap Delete > DELETE.

Wiping cache partition does not delete any files saved on the internal memory for as long as it’s done properly.

Fifth solution: Factory data reset/master reset your LG V35 ThinQ.

A master reset would be the last possible solution you can try on if your LG V35 ThinQ still lags or freezes after performing prior workarounds. This will erase everything from your device and then restores the default settings. Any tough bugs and complex system errors that caused such recurring symptoms will also be cleared in the process. For safekeeping, back up all important files beforehand. Then follow these steps to master reset or factory data reset through settings menu:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Navigate to Phone Management.
  3. Then tap Backup & Reset.
  4. Mark the option to Back up my data and Automatic restore, as you would prefer.
  5. Tap Backup account.
  6. Select the desired account.
  7. Tap Factory data reset. If you want, you can tap the option to Erase SD card as well. Doing so will wipe all SD card files during the reset.
  8. Tap Reset phone.
  9. If prompted, enter your password or PIN code to continue.
  10. Tap Delete all.
  11. Then confirm action by tapping on Reset.

In the case where your phone is freezing or not responding, you can carry out a factory data reset through Android Recovery. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  3. When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  4. When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  5. Press the Power button to reset the device.

Performing a master reset usually takes care of worst symptoms inflicted by software bugs, malware or fatal system errors that could not be remedied by standard workarounds. That being said, your LG V35 ThinQ should be back up and running smoothly again after the reset. If the freezing and lagging symptoms reoccurs, then you’re likely dealing with hardware problem, which means your device needs service.
