How to fix a Galaxy Note5 that won’t install an update

Hello #GalaxyNote5 fans! Today’s troubleshooting article will help four Note5 users who contacted us for help. The main case in this post is about a Note5 being unable to install an update. We understand some of you may be having similar questions to one of our readers below so be sure to follow our suggestions.

Problem #1: How to fix a Galaxy Note5 that won’t install an update

Hello! I have a problem with my Galaxy Note5. I had some battery issues, so I did a hard reset. However that did not resolve the problem. I just found out on your website how to do it. But that doesn’t matter. Since that hard reset (at least I think so) I am stuck on Android 6.0.1. I receive updates, however, when I try to update, it restarts and goes into that thing, but it says “Error!” for a second and then restarts. Than it says “A firmware update error has been found. Visit a Samsung Service.” , and it makes a report, which never works.

Solution: There are legitimate reasons why your Note5 may be unable to install an update. Let’s discuss the possible reasons one by one.

Incompatible firmware

For one, it may be built for a different network and not for the current one. In that case, it’s firmware is simply not compatible with the firmware of your current carrier. Every time your Note5 attempts to download and install a carrier update, it may return an error.

Not enough storage space

Another reason why it’s not updating may be due to lack of storage space. Make sure that there’s at least 1GB of free storage before attempting any update.

Root or unofficial firmware

Sometimes, rooting software or custom ROMs may block a device from installing updates as well. If your Note5 was rooted or running custom ROM, try to return everything to stock first before attempting to download an update. If you are rooted, try to unroot the device and see what happens. If you flashed unofficial firmware to it, return everything to stock first. Alternatively, you can also manually install an update by flashing it.

Workaround

If your Note5 was not rooted, not running custom firmware, and originally built for the current network, there may be other external factors causing it not to install an update via air (OTA update). Try to install an update using Samsung Smart Switch and see what happens.

Get Samsung support

If the problem continues after doing all the troubleshooting steps above, bring the phone to your local Samsung service center so they can update it manually.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note5 freezing, crashing, and slow when overheating

Greetings. I had a problem with my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 which it stuck in Samsung Logo. My friend tried to format it but still after formatting No Booting Up to the screen that i will add my Samsung account , google account , etc is not appearing. However, he flashed the system and  installed firmware and my phone started to work normally. then one day (after 1 week), when i was charging my phone, its temperature rose abnormally and then the system started to crash and freeze a lot (till now ). something to add , even the phone is lagging a lot but its temperature now is normal, unlike that time when the temperature rose abnormally.  i don’t know if the 1st case (when it stuck in Samsung Logo ) and the 2nd case (when its working but all the time freezing and crashing ) are related somehow but i tried to format it a lot and still lagging. What do you think about this problem(s) ? it would be great if u can send me any tips that would solve my problem. I came to a conclusion that maybe that firmware is not working probably (hence the phone worked normally for a week then the crashes start to appear ) or maybe something damaged inside the phone when the temp rose that time and never rose again (but if something damaged maybe the whole system should be inoperative so the phone will not even work at all ).

I am trying to fix it but if you have anything that would help my i will appreciate it .  (you may say go buy new one xD i will but my budget says :no ,not now xD) thank you in advance , waiting for your response .  Regards.

Solution: If your Note5 started lagging when its temperature rose, there probably is a hardware malfunction causing it. This can be the reason why nothing changes even after you format or factory reset the device. If your friend used the stock firmware for this phone model when he flashed it, then that’s another sign that this not a software issue you’re dealing with and hence, it’s something beyond your capability to fix.

Overheating is usually accompanied by slow performance issue. If your Note5 becomes way too slow when its temperature rises, there must be a hardware issue behind it. Unless you are a trained Samsung technician, it’s downright impossible to know what the real problem is. It can be a bad battery or any other component in the logic board. We suggest that you bring the device to Samsung so they can physically check the hardware for you. If that’s not possible, let an independent service shop do the task.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note5 shuts down on normal mode but stays stable on Power Saving Mode

Hello. I’m using Galaxy Note 5 for years and from some months back onwards my phone started to shut down randomly at any battery percentage and won’t turn on unless i plug in the charger. The phone works fine in power saving mode. I checked it many times, it won’t shutdown in power saving mode. I hate to see the phone in power saving with grey bar on top. So what might be the issue. Please help me. What should i do?!

Solution: Power saving mode works by limiting the capability of the device. In this mode, the pressure to the battery is lesser and thus, less demanding. If your Note5 is stable on Power Saving Mode only, that means that the battery has probably lost significant capacity. Since you can’t easily replace the battery yourself, we suggest that you let Samsung do it for you. If the phone is already out of warranty, you can bring it to a third party shop so they can do the same task.

Problem #4: How to fix a Galaxy Note5 that won’t read any SD card

On my Galaxy NOte5 I went to settings, clicked on storage, then on SD card storage. There was an emblem; I clicked it and it asked Mount or unmount. I did not complete that operation and turn my phone off. when I turn it back on my SD card was not supported. I have tried every SD card you can imagine and it keeps telling me does not support it. Is it the phone or Android that is the issue? This is the error code that I keep getting ( command ’18 volume partition disk:179,64 public ‘failed with ‘400 18 Command failed’ ) just accidentally touching the unmount button can cause this major issue? it is ridiculous, I’m sorry, I’m just so frustrated. I know a guy that had the same problem it took hours to fix it but he can’t remember how he did it I don’t have hours involved I have days involved… please help!!!

Solution: If this same exact error keeps showing up even when using other SD card, that’s clearly an issue with your Note5. To fix the problem, you want to wipe the phone and return its software information to their defaults. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
