One of the common problems with GTA 5 over the years is game crashing. Based on reports and literature about this issue, there’s no single reason why this is happening. In this article, we include the most common causes of this problem and how best to fix it.
Reasons why GTA 5 keeps crashing on your PS4
There are 4 reasons why your GTA 5 game keeps on crashing. Let’s discuss each of these factors below.
Random GTA 5 game bug.
Since its debut, GTA 5 developers have already released numerous patches for known bugs. This is going on until now, even after several years since this game was released. Game glitches occur from time to time and fortunately, majority of them are minor. If your GTA 5 game crashes infrequently without pattern, your console may have encountered a random bug. Try rebooting it to see if that will fix the issue.
PS4 firmware glitch.
At other times, the problem may lie with the console itself, either due to a software issue, or with its hardware. There’s typically no direct way to know which is the real cause of a problem so you’ll have to perform a number of troubleshooting steps to eliminate as many factors as possible.
Bad game disc.
A dirty, scratched, or cracked game disc may cause your PS4’s optical drive to stop loading or reading the game. If a PS4 stops reading a disc, there’s usually an error that shows up on the screen although at times, some games may simply crash.
If you have the disc version of GTA 5, make sure that you take care of your game disc by cleaning its surface before you insert it to the console.
Overtime, game discs may develop surface scratches which may lead to reading problems. If there’s just too much scratches on the disc and GTA 5 keeps crashing because of it, you may have to either get a new disc or buy a digital version.
The worst thing that can happen on a game disc is cracks. Cracks usually develops in the middle of the disc if you are not careful with handling it. As cracks gradually grows from the inside out, your console may simply stop reading the game entirely.
Console is overheating.
A less common reason why some games crash is lack of ventilation. Your PS4 may restart itself if the internal temperature becomes too hot. Avoid placing your PS4 in places where it’s exposed to direct heat. Also, you want to ensure that air can freely circulate around your PS4.
How to fix GTA 5 crashing issue on PS4
There are a few tricks that you can try if your GTA 5 game is crashing on you.
- Reboot your PS4.
First, you want to restart the system. Some minor bugs and issues are fixed by doing this simple solution.
Reboot the console by doing it on your controller first. Alternatively, you can try pressing and holding the Power button in front to restart the system.
If it doesn’t respond, unplug it from the wall outlet or power strip and wait for about 1 minute before turning it back on. - Check the disc for dirt, scratches, and cracks.
If you have GTA 5 on disc, try wiping it with a clean microfiber cloth to remove fingerprint or dust. The proper way to do this is by wiping from the inside of the disc going outwards.
If your disc has a lot of scratches, this may be the reason why the PS4 is having trouble loading the game, or crashing in the middle of a game. Like cracks, deep scratches are permanent and not fixable. If the game won’t load at all even after cleaning the disc, you may have PS4 not reading disc issue. - Update games and firmware.
A possible solution to some game crashing issues is keeping the games and PS4 firmware updated. By default, your PS4 should notify you about the need to update GTA 5 if it’s connected to the internet. The same should also be true if the PS4 firmware has to be updated.
In case you only want to use your console offline, you can consider a PS4 offline update. - Make sure PS4 is well-ventilated.
Overheating can cause the PS4 to crash randomly. Make sure that you place your PS4 in a cool place with a lot of ventilation.
If you noticed that the console has become too hot and causing the system to crash, turn it off for about 1 hour before using again.
If overheating happens frequently, even when it’s well-ventilated, bad hardware may be to blame. You should contact Sony to have the console repaired.
