Google Project Fi Versus Verizon Unlimited Data Plan

If you depend heavily on mobile internet access, an unlimited data plan is a must. While unlimited data plans are offered by all major carriers, Verizon always stood out with its excellent network quality, being named the number one overall network in the United States for the 9th time in a row.

But there’s a new challenger on the block as Google has recently introduced what’s essentially an unlimited data plan, and, in this article, we take a closer look at what it has to offer and how it compares to Verizon’s unlimited data plans.

Google Fi Bill Protection

Bill Protection is Google’s recent attempt how to convince consumers to run away from their current carriers. Essentially, Google has decided to cap the current pricing of $10 for each gigabyte of data at 6 GB without charging anything extra above that.

In practice, it doesn’t matter if you consume 6 or 10 or 15 or 30 GB of data in a month because Google won’t charge you more than $60 for it. Add the standard $20 every month for unlimited calls and texts and you’re looking at what’s essentially an $80 unlimited plan.

Best of all, Google’s Bill Protection also covers international data usage, which means that you can pay only $80 a month for 15 GB of high-speed internet access in more than 135 countries around the world. Not included on the list are Australia, Canada, San Marino, and other countries that are usually not covered by unlimited plans. International texts are free, but calls cost $0.20 per minute unless they happen over Wi-Fi.

There are a few caveats that you should keep in mind, however. To start with, there’s another limit at the 15 GB mark. Go over 15 GB of data a month, you Google will slow down your internet speed to 256 Kbps. The good news is that you can resume paying $10 per gigabyte to unlock full LTE speeds.

If you have two people on your plan, then each gets 5 GB of data. Add another person, and the data cap increases by 2 GB. Add another one, and you get another 2 GB of extra data again, and so on. Regardless of how many people you add, the 15 GB bandwidth throttling limit still applies.

Is Google Fi Better than Verizon Unlimited?

Verizon has also recently tweaked its unlimited data offering. Its $80-per-month plan, Beyond Unlimited, now costs $85 per month and includes one line, 22 GB of 4G data, unlimited talk and text, 720p video streaming, unlimited mobile hotspot (throttled to 600 Kbps after 15 GB), and talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada included in the plan.

Verizon also offers its Go Unlimited plan, which costs $75 per month for one line and includes lower priority internet access, SD video streaming, unlimited mobile hotspot throttled to 600 Kbps, and talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada.

If you would like your Verizon plan to travel with you around the world, you must purchase Verizon TravelPass for $10 per day per device to take your talk, text and data allowances with you to more than 130 countries.

As such, Google Fi with its Bill Protection is potentially a much more affordable plan than both Verizon Unlimited plans for anyone who travels internationally and wants to enjoy convenient mobile internet access every day.
