The Google Maps team has been testing a new speed limits feature which displays the speed you should be on in a particular road. After initial testing in several countries including the U.S., the feature is finally live in 40 countries. The company gave out the confirmation earlier today, suggesting that the feature is live on Android and iOS devices right away.
However, depending on your location, the features might take a while to appear on your app. In addition to including speed limits, Maps will also display speed traps on your path, giving you ample time to slow down and avoid unnecessary fines. The feature is expected to go live in countries like Australia, Brazil, US, Canada, UK, India, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.
Notably, countries like France and Germany are missing from the list. This is because local EU laws restrict apps from having access such information. Given that a feature like this is illegal in these countries, we don’t see a fix coming anytime soon.
One would say that features like speed limit warnings and information on speed cameras are long overdue on Google Maps. Most of these features here are making their way to the app via Waze, a navigation based company Google acquired a few years ago.
