How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note 8 can’t install app updates issue
There’s no official set of guidelines how to troubleshoot Google Play Store. In this post, we will treat it just like any other app so the troubleshooting steps should still be more or less similar to the ones we’ve created for specific app problems before.
Solution #1: Verify Google and/or Play Store app is not down
Before you go on doing more drastic troubleshooting steps, you want to make sure that there’s no Google or Play Store issues that you don’t have control over. In another Android phone, try to log in to your Google account and see if you can install apps or updates via Play Store. Keep in mind that no internet service is up 100% of the time. Even Google can encounter server problems, though it’s rare.
Solution #2: Force stop Play Store app
The easiest and sometimes effective way to deal with sudden and inexplicable app glitch is to stop the app from running called force stopping. Google Play Store app is no exception so make sure you try this solution and see if it works. To force close an app, just tap on the Recent button (the left button of the Home button), then tapping X on the problematic app.
Alternatively, you can do it via Settings by doing these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Find Google Play Store app and tap it.
- Tap FORCE STOP button.
Solution #3: Clear Google Play Store data
If force stopping Play Store app won’t work, try to reset the app’s setting back to their defaults. If the current state of the app is buggy, clearing its data may help bring it back to its working order.
Here are the steps on how to clear Google Play Store app data:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Find Google Play Store app and tap it.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- Tap Clear Data button.
Solution #4: Clear Google Services Framework data
Android depends on a number of apps and services in order to work properly. When it comes to managing apps, Play Store and Google Services Framework apps are at the forefront and any bugs in them may cause a problem. So, just like the Play Store app, you also need to troubleshoot Google Services Framework app by reverting its settings back to defaults. The steps should be basically the same as the ones provided for Solution #3. Instead of tapping Play Store of course, you want to look for and tap Google Services Framework app.
Solution #5: Restart the phone
Restarting your smartphone may sound very basic but a lot of users, when troubleshooting their device for whatever reason, fails to do this. Well, make sure that you don’t. Restarting a phone clears its memory and refreshes the system in general. It’s easy to do and may be a quick way to deal with the issue at hand.
Solution #6: Toggle wifi
Play Store app needs internet connection to work and sometimes, it can get stuck simply because it is unable to detect that the wifi or mobile data connection you’re using no longer exists. To fix the issue, make sure that you turn wifi off, then back on. Do the same thing if you depend on mobile data connection when updating or installing apps.
Solution #7: Delete system cache
Clearing an Android’s system cache can sometimes fix problems, especially if they involve installations of something. APKs or installer packages as well as other temporary files needed by the system are stored in the cache partition and clearing this partition may be an effective way to fix problems. If you haven’t tried it yet, here’s how it’s done:
- Turn off your Note 8.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Solution #7: Safe mode
Third party apps may cause problems with the operating system or with other apps. To check if one of your downloaded applications is to blame, run the device in safe mode and see how Play Store app works. If you’ll be able to install updates normally and no popups will show, that’s a clear sign of a problematic app being present in the system and causing your trouble.
To restart your Note 8 to safe mode, follow these steps:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
- When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
Solution #8: Wipe the phone
Finally, if nothing works at this point, you must perform a factory reset to return all pre-installed app settings and Android settings back to defaults. Here’s how:
- Back your important files up.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
