Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 Edge that shuts off on its own

While the steps in this guide are safe and easy to follow, things can still happen that may make things worse so proceed at your own risk. It is always advisable to consult a technician if the issues you’re experiencing seem difficult to explain.

Step 1: Try to find out if the problem occurs when the phone has a stable power source

Perhaps it’s the battery. It may have been damaged and can no longer hold charge like before. So, the first step should be to know how the phone behaves if it has a more stable power source that its battery. It means that you have to plug the charger in and continue using your phone to see if it still shuts down on its own because if the problem gets fixed by this very simple step, then as early as now, I recommend you have the battery replaced.

The Galaxy S7 Edge doesn’t have a removable battery so you would need a tech’s help to install a new battery pack on your phone. You may order the battery online and just employ the help of a technician in opening your phone up and installing the new battery.

However, if the problem still occurs even when the phone is plugged in, then you might be looking at a possible firmware issue and you need to continue your troubleshooting.

Step 2: Isolate the problem by booting up your phone into the Safe Mode

There is always a possibility that one or some of your apps is causing the problem and at this point, we don’t know if it belongs to the pre-installed or download ones and restarting your S7 Edge in safe mode can help you determine what the real issue is.

So, follow the steps below and continue observing your device…

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

While the phone is in this state, observe it closely to find out if it still shuts down without your intervention because if so, then it’s a clear sign the problem isn’t with your apps but might be with the firmware. Otherwise, you need to look for the culprit and uninstall it. If it’s the case and finding the culprit is harder than backing up your data, then do the latter and then reset your phone.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

Step 3: Try restarting your device into Recovery Mode and delete the system cache

While this procedure is very effective for issues that occur after a firmware update, it’s recommended you do this for this specific problem we’re tackling here. I’ve seen a lot of issues like this before that were caused by some corrupt caches so I still suggest you do this. After all, the procedure is safe and none of your data or files will be lost. Here’s how you do it…

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Continue observing your phone after doing the procedure.

Step 4: Boot into Recovery Mode again and do the master reset

If wiping the cache partition won’t fix the problem, then you have no other choice but to reset your phone but before that, make sure you backup your files and data stored in your phone’s internal storage as they’ll be deleted during the process.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Step 5: Bring your phone to the shop and have it checked

As far as troubleshooting is concerned, the master reset is as far as you go. If the problem continues after that, then we might be looking at a possible hardware issue. We’ve already ruled out all other possibilities except hardware issues and for an average user, there’s nothing much you can do about it so professional help is needed.
