Fix Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that freezes and becomes unresponsive & other various firmware issues

Being one of the most powerful smartphones this year, the #Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (#S7Edge) is expected to run smoothly without having any problems but then again, problems occur without a warning. So, in this post, I will be addressing various firmware related problems including freezing, hanging and becoming unresponsive without apparent reason or cause.

Galaxy-S7-Edge-can't-recognize-fingerprint

The first problem is about the fingerprint scanner of the S7 Edge that, according to our reader, won’t function if he uses Nova gesture launcher. The phone reportedly won’t recognize his prints but if he’s not using the third-party launcher, the scanner can unlock the device without issues. Continue reading to understand the problem and learn how to deal with it.

All other problems I tackled here either started without any cause or after a firmware update. If you’ve already contacted us before regarding a similar issue, browse through the problems below to see if your concern is included. If not, then visit our S7 Edge troubleshooting page and find related issues. Feel free to use our solutions and troubleshooting guides to fix your problem. If you need further assistance, you can always contact us by filling up our Android issues questionnaire. Make sure you include the details of the problem.

Fingerprint doesn’t work when used with Nova gesture on Galaxy S7 Edge

Problem: When I use a Nova gesture to lock my screen, I cannot unlock phone using fingerprint scanner. Was working fine yesterday, but I installed an update today, and it now requires a PIN/Password after scanning my finger, nullifying the benefit. Locking phone using power button or waiting for screen to timeout allows fingerprint scan to unlock without any issues.

Answer: Apparently, the fingerprint scanner works without using a third-party app and that’s what’s important here. Needless to say, there’s no problem with it unless, of course, if you use a third-party launcher such as the one you mentioned. With that in mind, have you tried using a different launcher? I mean besides Nova gesture, have tried installing other third-party launchers?

Should the fingerprint work with launchers, then the problem is with the app. Perhaps the developer has yet to roll out an update to make it compatible with the new firmware on your phone. In this case, there’s not much you can do about it except file a report to make sure the developer knows.

What if the fingerprint lock won’t work with other third-party launchers as well? What’s important here is that the scanner works and it can actually recognize your fingerprints. Again, the developers of those apps may need to release updates to fix compatibility issues.

Galaxy S7 Edge froze while watching video, screen turned black, soft keys lit

Problem: Well all day it has been working fine until about 7:30 when I was watching a youtube video and it wouldn’t let me exit the video anymore and then the video froze too a few minutes later, then about a half an hour later, the screen turned black. But the touch screen buttons next to the home button lit up and now it’s been about 2 hours after the screen turned black and the buttons lit up and it’s in the same state. Nothing works. I tried charging it, nothing. I tried shutting it down and pressing the power button, nothing. I pressed the home button, nothing. Nothing works. Please help me as soon as you can.

Answer: Two words; system crash. That’s the problem with your phone. Fortunately, you can fix it without sacrificing or compromising your data and files. Just press and hold the Volume Down button and Power keys together for 15 seconds and your phone should reboot normally.

If, however, the phone is suffering from serious firmware issues, then the forced reboot procedure is just a bandaid over the wound. To know if it’s a firmware issue or not, just continue using your phone and wait if the problem happens again. If it does, then boot your phone in safe mode and continue your observation. Here’s how you boot in safe mode…

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If the phone may still crash in safe mode, then you have to reset it but first, make sure you backup all your data and files, then follow these steps…

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

I hope this helps.

Galaxy S7 Edge Internet app randomly opens tabs, redirect to Uber

Problem: Hi Droid Guy! I’ve recently just bought this phone. Transferred everything over using the USB connector. Now my phone keeps randomly opening tabs on the Internet that says ‘go tapit’ and also automatically takes me to ‘Uber’ on play store. I just set up my phone and really don’t fancy rebooting it! Please send me any ways to resolve it or some sort of advice. Thank you!

Answer: Obviously, that random tab is an ad that when you touch it, you’ll be redirected to a certain page on Play Store and suggests you download the app–in this case, it’s Uber. If you also touch the page, the real Play Store app will pop up and from there you can actually download the app.

My point is, it’s all in the Internet app. It could be that you’ve opened a webpage that contains ads scripts or you may have installed an app that controls the ads. So, the first thing you need to do is clear the cache and data of the Internet app:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Internet.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.

If this procedure fails, find the app that might be controlling the ad and uninstall it. Of course, that’s easier said than done. So, if you think it will take time finding the app rather than resetting your phone, the do the latter but don’t forget to backup your data and files first. After the reset, do not restore your apps, instead, download them one by one so that you will know which one is causing the problem.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

Galaxy S7 Edge screen goes blank randomly a few times a day

Problem: Basically my s7 edge keeps going blank screen on me and turns off and I have trouble trying to switch it back on and this happens at least 3 to 4 times a day what am I supposed to do as I just purchased a brand new phone and this is very frustrating.

Answer: Obviously, it’s the same problem as with the one I addressed above–it’s a system crash. You can actually press and hold the Volume Down button and Power key together for 15 seconds to force reboot the phone. But then again, it’s not a permanent fix and evidently, the problem happens a few times a day. So, it’s a firmware issue and I’m not really sure how serious it is. For you to be able to fix it, you just have to backup your data and perform a master reset. That should do it.

Galaxy S7 Edge FRP locked after master reset

Problem: I found a phone and my sister needs a phone. I figured we could use it. It was locked but I did the reboot thing with the power button, volume control and home button and I got in but I can’t set it up for her when I get to the email part. Just wondering how to get passed this or if there’s no unlocking it.

Answer: First off, it’s not your phone and since you can’t get into it as screen lock was probably engaged, you did the master reset. Now you’re stuck because the phone is asking for the account that was setup prior to the reset and you’re asking us to help you bypass it? No, we don’t work that way.

I suggest you keep the phone turned on, mount the SIM card back if you’ve removed it and wait for the call from the owner. Come on, return it to its rightful owner.

And sorry, Samsung already patch the loophole wherein you can bypass such crucial FRP lock and just in case you’re thinking of flashing the firmware, you’ll still be greeted with FRP lock message after that.

Just return it.

Galaxy S7 Edge soft keys started to glitch after underwater video recording

Problem: After going into my pool and trying to record in high def, the phone touch keys at the bottom started to glitch. The back key lights on and off frequently and the recent apps key goes completely haywire. If you wish, I can always send a video about it.  Currently I haven’t tried a hard reset or a factory reset. Best,  Aj.

Answer: First off, AJ, the phone isn’t waterproof but water-resistant. I don’t want to explain the details of the IP68 rating of the S7 Edge but in layman’s terms, water can still get into it one way or the other and it seems that’s the reason why your device started to glitch after taking a dive.

Fortunately, the liquid damage isn’t really serious so I suggest here’s what you need to do:

  1. Remove both the SIM card and SD card and leave the tray unmounted.
  2. Remove third-party cases.
  3. Put the phone in a bowl of rice upright and leave it there for a couple of days.

This will remove water residue inside the phone and if you’re lucky enough, the phone will work without a hitch after that. Otherwise, you really need to bring it to a technician to have it cleaned. I think that’s all that needs to be done.

Cannot setup Yahoo account using Email app on Galaxy S7 Edge

Problem: New phone and trying to add yahoo account to the email app on home screen. I put in the correct login and password and a box comes up that says Unable to set up account, incorrect username or password (they are both correct). Or POP3/IMAP access is not turned on for account. Check your account settings or contact your service provider. Please Help! Thank you, Corinne.

Answer: First of all, Corinne, make sure the phone is connected to the internet during the setup process. Then, double-check the validity of your login credentials. To make sure you got the correct username and password, try to login to your account using a web browser first. If you can login just fine, try to setup your account again and make sure server settings are properly set. Now, if the problem still persists, don’t use the Email app for your Yahoo account anymore. Instead, download and install the official Yahoo Mail app from the Play Store and use it. At least, you can rest assured all settings are correct and you only have to worry about your username and password.

Galaxy S7 Edge Gallery app not working after an update

Problem: Got a notification that my phone needed to be updated…I updated the phone and the gallery hasn’t worked since. I’ve done a master reboot and it’s still not working.

Answer: App-related issues that occur after an update maybe as simple as typical app problems or they can be a sign of a serious firmware issue. So, the first thing you need to do is clear the cache and data of the Gallery app:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Gallery.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.

If the problem remains, then try wiping the cache partition to force the phone to recreate new system caches. It’s a very effective procedure for firmware issues that occur after an update but if it fails as well, then you have to reset your phone. Here’s how you wipe the cache partition:

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

New Galaxy S7 Edge crashes and restarts on its own

Problem: I just bought new Samsung galaxy s7 edge but the problem is that it crashes and restarts itself over and over again and it’s showing that the battery is charging from cable when infact there is none connected..I have done factory reset but it didn’t work.

Answer: Obviously, the phone is defective out of the box. Don’t waste any more time, go back to the store where you bought it and have it replaced while you’re still eligible to receive a brand new replacement unit.

Galaxy S7 Edge showing “custom binary blocked by FRP lock” after reset

Problem: Just after purchasing the phone added google account information and restarted my S7 Edge phone. The phone is not getting restarted and showing a red notice at the left corner mentioning custom binary blocked by FRP lock. Hold the up volume key, home and restart button and wipe data / factory reset restored but still i am facing the same problem. Please kindly advise the solution as it a day old phone and been gifted by my wife. Thanks, Amit.

Answer: Apparently, the Google account was still in the phone and the screen lock was still engaged when the phone was reset. I understand you haven’t mentioned if you reset it or not but this kind of problem only happens after a reset or after flashing a firmware. If you haven’t done anything, then have the phone replaced as you can’t fix it on your own. We don’t want to suggest things to you yet since the phone is pretty new. You might still be able to have it replaced but if we do something to it, then the chance of getting a new replacement unit may be wasted.

Galaxy S7 Edge left charging all night, orange light still lit after unplugging the charger

Problem: I have charged my phone all night, when I woke up this morning after taking out the charger, the orange light still appears. I try to hold the power button for 10 seconds and nothing happens. Please help!

Answer: Well, try this: press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key for 15 seconds. The phone will reboot but continue observing it. If the problem happens more frequently, backup your data and reset it.
