How to troubleshoot a Galaxy A5 that no longer charges

Problem: Hello guys. I have a problem with my phone and I’m really worried since I only just bought this device last month as a replacement to my old Galaxy S2. It’s a Galaxy A5 and it may not be as expensive as the S8 or any other Samsung phones, it usually got the job done especially texting, calling and emails. Recently, I noticed it became a little bit slow but I didn’t mind it thinking it may have been just a glitch or something. Then a couple of days ago when I tried charging it, it didn’t charge but I tried and tried until it did. Today I had to plug its charger again but it doesn’t charge at all. I already tried a hundred times charging to no avail. Is my phone already defective? If you guys know how to fix this, please help me. Thanks in advance.
Troubleshooting: All we can do about it is check the charger, the phone and do the troubleshooting procedures. That said, here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Reboot your phone in safe mode and charge
This must be the first thing you should do–temporarily disable all third-party apps then try charging the phone to see if it charges. If it does, then the problem is caused by one or some of the apps you installed. You then need to find those apps, update them, clear their caches and data and even uninstall them if the problem remains. Follow the steps for each procedure below…
However, if the phone still not charges while in safe mode, then you have to move on to the next step.
How to update apps in Galaxy A5
- From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Tap Play Store.
- Tap the Menu key and then tap My Apps. To keep your apps automatically updated, tap the Menu key, tap Settings, and then tap Auto-update apps to select the check box.
- Choose one of the following options:
- Tap Update [xx] to update all applications with updates available.
- Tap an individual application and then tap Update to update a single application.
How to clear app cache and data in Galaxy A5
- From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Applications.
- Tap Application manager.
- Tap the desired application in the default list or tap MORE > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
- Tap Clear cache.

- From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.

Step 2: Turn off your Galaxy A5 and charge
Now that we know that your phone doesn’t charge even in safe mode, it’s now time to charge it while powered down. This will rule out the possibility that the problem is caused by something in the firmware or the hardware may have some issues that it doesn’t charge while the phone is using the battery to power up its components. In this case, however, the problem is more serious and if the phone charges while turned off, proceed to the next steps before deciding to bring it to a shop. Do the same even if the phone doesn’t charge if turned off.
Step 3: Try connecting your phone to a computer or laptop
Computer doesn’t give out electric current of more than 1 Ampere in any of its USB ports but that would be enough to make the phone respond when it senses electricity flows through its circuits. We don’t necessarily need the phone to charge through a computer, we just want to see if it responds because if so, then it must be a problem with the charger. In this case, you just need to buy a new charger and the problem is fixed. However, if the phone still refuses to charge even if it’s connected to a computer, then move on to the next step.
Step 4: Reboot your phone in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition
It’s always possible that this problem is caused by some corrupt system caches. So, I want you to try to delete all the caches so that they will be replaced with new ones. To do that, you have have reboot your phone in recovery mode and wipe cache partition:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Step 5: Backup your files and data, then reset your phone
You only have to do this if your phone still won’t charge after wiping the cache partition and that it has enough battery to backup your files and data. There’s no guarantee that the problem will be fixed by doing this but you still have to do it before you bring the phone to a shop. After all, the first thing the tech would do is reset the phone if you haven’t done it yet, so it’s better that you do it prior to having someone take a look at it.
But before the reset, take time backing up your files and data and then don’t forget to disable the Factory Reset Protection so that you won’t be locked out after the reset.
How to disable Factory Reset Protection on Galaxy A5
To turn off the device anti-theft, you will have to sign out of your Google ID on the device and elect to not sign in with a Google ID into any Google services. Once you sign in with a Google ID to any service and setup a PIN, password or fingerprint lock, you are automatically turning on anti-theft. To sign out of your Google ID, follow these steps:
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Accounts.
- Tap Google.
- Tap your Google ID email address. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
- Tap More.
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.
How to reset your Samsung Galaxy A5
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Alternatively, you can also reset your Galaxy A5 from the Settings menu…
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Backup and reset.
- If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
- If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Tap Reset device.
- If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password.
- Tap Continue.
- Tap Delete all.
If the problem still persists after all this, then bring your phone to a shop or back to the store where you bought it.

I read through your troubleshooting steps. Here are three other options to consider before people start wiping their systems.
1. Use a spare working USB android phone charger – fast charge won’t work but normal charging will.
If it works, then you need a new charger. The correct part number for the A5 2017 charger is EP TA20UWE.
2. If the spare charger does not work, inspect inside the USB C connector. Are any pins missing or broken? There should be 5 pins. The pin and connector design seem to be a weakness in these cables.
The correct part number for the A5 and A3 2017, USB C to USB A is
GH39-01886A. I had to contact Samsung so they sent a new one.
3. You can also verify that the cable is the problem if you take your phone to your nearest mobile shop and ask if they could attach your mobile to their in-store A5 2017 cable. This will verify the cable is at fault.
If you have a new phone, both parts should be under warranty so contact Samsung via their website. They have a chat service. You will need a scan of your receipt to hand so you can attach it to an email as directed by the agent.
They will arrange a replacement.

Wiping cache partition or resetting the phone to factory settings WILL NOT work. It’s not os issue.You can also try swapping with a know good charger and a charging cable. If the problem persists, Get your phone checked by an authorized service technician. It’s mostly the battery itself. To know the battery status on the dail screen type *#0228#
This gives some stats about the battery, you can try the quick start option. It has just once worked to reset the battery stats.
in my phone for the power sharing app is not charging.. what should I do to disable this app… or off it. this app is opened automatically by itself . Plz make a solution
