Mobile VR is on its way out

Virtual reality for mobile platforms is not in great shape. Google launched efforts like Daydream VR, and Samsung and Oculus have been spearheading the Gear VR program for years now. Unfortunately, it just hasn’t caught on as much as manufacturers have hoped, and Oculus itself has pretty much killed the Gear VR program by offering its own standalone headset.

That said, the Galaxy S10 series of phones and Galaxy Note 10 series is pretty much the last as far as virtual reality goes. There are some third-party headsets that you can use, but they don’t provide you with nearly the same functions that the Gear VR or Daydream platforms did.

So, you can still use the Gear VR headset with your Samsung devices; however, you will have to use the included adapter from Samsung to make it work.

Oculus GO

Another one where you won’t have to set your phone inside, just download the Oculusapp on your Galaxy S10E, and then follow the instruction to pair.

It’s easily one of the best options out there for virtual reality — it’s easy to connect up to, and actually runs off of the Daydream platform. It doesn’t require a smartphone to sit in the headset like most VR options require. Since it’s an all-in-one, single unit just like the Oculus Go, you use it by downloading the Mirage Solo app on your Galaxy S10E, and then you pair it up with the virtual reality headset through the instructions in that app. Once paired, put the Mirage Solo on, power it up, and you’re ready to go.

There is a “con” that comes with the Mirage Solo — you’re getting some pretty poor battery life, and it’s so expensive. It’s convenient and easy to setup, but VR time will be drastically reduced to just a couple of hours of use off of a single charge. Not only that, but this one will set you back a couple hundred dollars.

Daydream View

The other Daydream-based headsets that we showed you are all-in-one solutions that sit on the pricey side. The Daydream View, from Google, is a little different in that it requires power from your Galaxy S10E. That makes it just a little cheaper. But, on top of that, Google’s platform is one of the best as far as virtual reality goes. It’s well maintained, and updated with new content — entertainment, games, and apps — on a regular and rotating basis. Entertainment is actually a big thing for the Daydream View and Daydream platform as a whole — Google’s virtual reality platform has some really big partnerships, such as Hulu and Netflix, that are bringing awesome VR content to the headset.

Gear VR With Controller

Enter, Samsung’s own virtual reality headset — the Gear VR with Controller. Made directly from Samsung, this one was specifically made for Samsung devices, this should work flawlessly with the Galaxy S10E. The nice thing about this one is that it is equipped with a controller, which can give you better navigation. Before, the Gear VR used motion navigation, which was awful and induced motion sickness. Now, the controller fixes that!

Using the Gear VR is easy — all you have to do is throw your Galaxy S10E into the Gear VR insert, put the Gear VR on, and you’re immediately entered into the world of virtual reality.

VeeR Oasis

VeeR Oasis is up last on our countdown, and acts as a cheap way to get into virtual reality. Most virtual reality headsets are expensive, so this one provides a breath of fresh air for those that can’t quite drop $100 or more on a headset. Since it isn’t a standalone headset, and requires its power from the Galaxy S10E, this one will actually only cost you a couple of bucks. Set your phone in the VeeR Oasis slot and you’re ready to roll in virtual reality. Content is pretty limited, but if you’re wanting to take VR for a spin to see what it’s like, VeeR is a low-risk, low investment option.

As you can see, there are a lot of great platforms that the Galaxy S10E can play on. The Gear VR is an excellent piece of hardware, but we think the Daydream platform is one of the best. It’s the platform that has the most support, and has a ton of content available on it.
