How to troubleshoot LG G7 ThinQ with Messenger app that keeps crashing
The course of our troubleshooting will be to rule out the possibilities that the problem is just with the app or caused by any other minor problems and then we will move on to other procedures if one troubleshooting fails. Here’s what you need to do…
First solution: Reboot your device
Let’s try to see if this problem is due to a minor glitch caused by an app or the firmware. A reboot can always fix glitches so take time restarting your device. After the reboot, open Messenger and try to chat with others to know if it still crashes or not. If it still does, try the forced reboot procedure.
The forced reboot is far more effective than a normal restart because it will refresh your phone’s memory and reload all apps and services. To do this, press and hold the Power button and Volume Down at the same time until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.
Your phone is hard-wired to respond to this procedure as long as you do it correctly. If the app still crashes after doing this procedure, then move on to the next one.
Second solution: Clear cache and data of Messenger
Now, it’s time to go after the app itself because more often than not if an app crashes, it’s the one that has a problem. Clearing the cache and data of an app will reset it back to its default settings and configuration as well as replace those deleted files. That said, here’s what you should do:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap the General tab then select Apps & notifications.
- Tap App info.
- Tap to select a desired filter. Options include All, Enabled, and Disabled apps.
- Locate and select Messenger from the apps list.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache to wipe temporary files for the app.
- If you want to clear Messenger app data, tap Clear Data then tap Yes to confirm.
After this, open Messenger to know if it still crashes. If it still does, then try the next solution.
Third solution: Update Messenger
There could be a new version of Messenger and you may need to update it. Updates are rolled out to fix common issues, so follow these procedures to try and update Messenger:
- Tap the Apps icon from the Home screen.
- Tap Play Store.
- Tap Menu then go to My Apps.
- Select Update All to manually update all apps with pending updates at once. Or you can tap an individual application and then tap Update to update a single app.
- If you want to keep apps updated automatically, head back to Menu-> Settings-> then tap to mark the Auto-update apps checkbox.
If the problem is still not fixed after this, then get rid of Messenger and then reinstall it.
Fourth solution: Uninstall Messenger and reinstall it
Try remove all the apps associations with the firmware and other apps by uninstalling. Then, download it again and reinstall it on your phone. This will also make sure you have the latest version of the app on your device.
- Go to the Home screen then tap Settings.
- Tap Apps & notifications.
- Tap App info.
- Find and select Facebook app.
- Tap Uninstall then tap OK on the warning prompt, to uninstall or delete the app from your device.
I am confident that one of the procedures I mentioned here will fix the problem but if for some reason the issue continues, then you may have to reset your phone. Make sure you backup your files and data before the reset though as you may lose some important ones.
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Go to the General tab.
- Tap Restart & reset.
- Select Factory data reset option.
- If applicable, tap the Erase SD card checkbox to clear contents from your SD card.
- Tap Reset Phone then Delete All.
- Tap Reset to confirm action.
If the problem persists after the reset, then you may have to consider opting for service. It’s very likely that your phone is having some sort of physical or liquid damage that requires hardware repair.
