Verizon to Discontinue Message+ App in Upcoming Months; Expect Sunset
Verizon's Message+ App Shutdown: What You Need to Know
Verizon is set to discontinue its Message+ app, a move that will significantly impact users who rely on this service for their messaging needs. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the changes and what you can expect.
Shutdown Timeline and Impact
The Verizon Message+ app will start to shut down around June, marking the end of its functionality for sending and receiving messages. Once the app is shut down, users will no longer be able to use it for messaging purposes.
Alternative Messaging Solutions
Verizon recommends switching to Google Messages as an alternative for sending and receiving text messages. For Android users, Google Messages can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store if it's not already installed on the device. For iOS users, messaging will continue to be available only through the Message+ mobile app until further notice.
Web Client Access Discontinued
The ability to send and receive text messages via Verizon's website has already been discontinued as of December 11. However, users can continue to use the Android, iOS, or Mac desktop versions of the app. Instructions on how to use Google Messages on laptops and eligible mobile devices are available for those looking to transition.
Advanced Features and Group Messaging
Advanced features of the Message+ app, including WiFi messaging, will cease to function after the shutdown. Group messaging may also be affected, with other participants potentially receiving notifications indicating that your number has “left the group” due to system maintenance. These notifications can be ignored.
Device-Specific Considerations
For users of flip phones or dumbphones, such as the Kyocera Cadence or LG Exalt VN220, the shutdown of Message+ will effectively turn these devices into voice-only phones. These devices lack the capability to install alternative SMS clients, making the transition more challenging.
eGift Cards and Other Features
The purchase of eGift cards through Message+ is no longer available after April. However, previously purchased eGift cards can still be redeemed after this date.
Transitioning to Google Messages
To transition smoothly to Google Messages, follow these steps:
- Download Google Messages: If not already installed, download Google Messages from the Google Play Store.
- Set Up Google Messages: Follow the prompts to set up Google Messages on your device.
- Sync Messages: Ensure that your messages are synced across all your devices using Google Messages.
Native Device Features
For users who have disabled native device features to use Message+, uninstalling Message+ may restore these features. However, this is not guaranteed and may vary depending on the device.
By understanding these changes and taking the necessary steps, users can prepare for the transition away from Verizon's Message+ app and continue to send and receive messages seamlessly.
Verizon sucks
Will Verizon lower its monthly charges now.. don’t count on it. My wife and I have two lines and we are paying around $250 each month. I hesitate to switch back to Consumer Cellular just cause of stubborn habit. Verizon also announced this week in the mail a new budget package. So is Verizon rethinking its entire business model?
I switched to Google Messages. I understand there will be a learning curve. However, it’s irritating snd frustrating for users forced to switch there is no readilyvavailable Quick Reference of “features”. I.e. How do I put multiple contacts in a text? With M+, I just type and select. GM only allows one contact unless I use a go around. Doing that, it forces me to scroll through all my contacts to get tge ones I want. Then it brings up non-cell numbers to chose from. Not user friendly.
How do Android users of Message + “Sync Messages: Ensure that your messages are synced across all your devices using Google Messages”?
Will I lose all my message and pictures texted through Message + after tge shut down in November? How do I safe guard (sync) them to Google Messages?
Verizon as I understand it as of Oct 2, 2024 has not given any reason why they are shutting down it Messenger+ system. “Changerover Headache.” Notice showing on my Samsung Messenger app indicates that Google Messenger+ is already installed and just need to set up / activated.
Once Message+ is stopped, will we still be able to access our old messages? Will they remain on our phones?
how do I eliminate ads
why are they getting rid of this app? will the price go down because of it? it should!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I don’t like the fact that google practically has monopoly on everything we use on Android. One reason I don’t like apple peoducts but I need a messaging app. I have no choice and that’s not fair. Also some people with flip phones will be very upset.
Forcing us to go to Google. What a scam.
