Verizon to Discontinue Message+ App in Upcoming Months; Expect Sunset

Verizon's Message+ App Shutdown: What You Need to Know

Verizon is set to discontinue its Message+ app, a move that will significantly impact users who rely on this service for their messaging needs. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the changes and what you can expect.

Shutdown Timeline and Impact

The Verizon Message+ app will start to shut down around June, marking the end of its functionality for sending and receiving messages. Once the app is shut down, users will no longer be able to use it for messaging purposes.

Alternative Messaging Solutions

Verizon recommends switching to Google Messages as an alternative for sending and receiving text messages. For Android users, Google Messages can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store if it's not already installed on the device. For iOS users, messaging will continue to be available only through the Message+ mobile app until further notice.

Web Client Access Discontinued

The ability to send and receive text messages via Verizon's website has already been discontinued as of December 11. However, users can continue to use the Android, iOS, or Mac desktop versions of the app. Instructions on how to use Google Messages on laptops and eligible mobile devices are available for those looking to transition.

Advanced Features and Group Messaging

Advanced features of the Message+ app, including WiFi messaging, will cease to function after the shutdown. Group messaging may also be affected, with other participants potentially receiving notifications indicating that your number has “left the group” due to system maintenance. These notifications can be ignored.

Device-Specific Considerations

For users of flip phones or dumbphones, such as the Kyocera Cadence or LG Exalt VN220, the shutdown of Message+ will effectively turn these devices into voice-only phones. These devices lack the capability to install alternative SMS clients, making the transition more challenging.

eGift Cards and Other Features

The purchase of eGift cards through Message+ is no longer available after April. However, previously purchased eGift cards can still be redeemed after this date.

Transitioning to Google Messages

To transition smoothly to Google Messages, follow these steps:

  • Download Google Messages: If not already installed, download Google Messages from the Google Play Store.
  • Set Up Google Messages: Follow the prompts to set up Google Messages on your device.
  • Sync Messages: Ensure that your messages are synced across all your devices using Google Messages.

Native Device Features

For users who have disabled native device features to use Message+, uninstalling Message+ may restore these features. However, this is not guaranteed and may vary depending on the device.

By understanding these changes and taking the necessary steps, users can prepare for the transition away from Verizon's Message+ app and continue to send and receive messages seamlessly.

  1. I have a Kyocera DuraForce 2 which I have had for a good while with Tracfone as the carrier. Tracfone has used Verzon’s Messages+ app for quite a while. I tried to switch to GM unsuccessfully for several weeks, receiving error messages each time that the app stopped working before it would finish loading. I finally performed a Bing search and found that I had to go into settings and manually enable every feature before I could even get GM to finish loading. Now it is working just fine, although there has been a learning curve. For group messaging there is an embedded app called Gemini which I haven’t tried yet. Good luck all.

  2. Totally agree with Tiby: Google keeps scalping my personal photos despite my best efforts and I’ve found some in disturbing places. I will be looking or options outside of Verizon.

  3. nothing I have read to date tells me if I will lose prior conersations or contact list

  4. I hate Google, do not trust or want to use it, no privacy. This is been part of my Verizon service, will my bill cost be lowered since I’m paying for it now but loosing this service, basically less service? Do I need to switch carriers ? Are there other services that offer phone & text messaging service that won’t force me into Google? Will I face additional charges ? Please respond
