While almost every major manufacturer is currently rushing to get a 5G smartphone to market, Japanese manufacturer Sony is reportedly taking a more measured approach. According to the a new revelation by AndroPlus, Sony is currently testing the technology and will reportedly unveil a 5G capable handset only by 2020.
It is being suggested that Sony will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC on this flagship. Qualcomm is believed to be working on two models of the SD865 chip to cater to 4G and 5G devices respectively. This appears to be a wise move on Sony’s part as hurrying to launch a device with technology that more than half of the world doesn’t have access to doesn’t make a great deal of sense.
Manufacturers like Samsung have already offered smartphones with 5G capabilities, although adoption has been relatively low, especially in the U.S. where 5G networks are still pretty much in their nascent stages. However, carriers like Verizon are expected to significantly amp up their networks before the end of 2020.
As for Sony, the company has been relatively quiet in the mobile industry lately and with good reason. While manufacturers like Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the global smartphone market, Sony also faces stiff competition from Asian manufacturers like Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, and so on.
Sony’s most recent flagship, the Xperia 1 was launched in June this year, although it didn’t make much of a splash in the market. The company will hope for the tide to turn next year when 5G becomes more mainstream in the global markets.
