What to do with Samsung Galaxy S7 with the Black Screen of Death (BSoD) issue [Troubleshooting Guide]

Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 with a black and unresponsive screen
Problem: Hello! I have Samsung S7 and its display turned off automatically while I was on call and battery of the phone was also running low at that time, then, I tried restarting phone turns on and seems like working normal like receiving the calls etc. But display doesn’t turn on not sure what happened all of a sudden there is no drop or any hit to the phone to think it as a physical damage. Please help me figure out what’s the issue and how to handle it.
Solution: It seems like your phone is experiencing the so-called the black screen of death issue. Although there are other possibilities to consider, the most common one is when the system crashes. The software and other services will stop working and cause the device to become unresponsive.
Here are the things you can do about this problem…
Charge your device to be sure that the battery is not fully drained
You said the battery was running low before the issue started, that could be the reason why your phone refused to turn on as there is not enough power left in the battery to power up the components. In this instance, the best thing that you should do is to connect it to the charger and let it charge for at least 15 minutes. After you do so, turn on your phone and wait if it will boot up successfully. If the phone booted up after charging, then we can say the problem is fixed now.
However, if it didn’t respond to the charger and still refused to turn back on, then you must do the next procedure.

Perform forced reboot method on your phone
This time, while the device is connected to its charger, try to do a forced reboot procedure. This will simulate the battery disconnect which will refresh your phone’s memory. It’s a very effective method to deal with system crashes.
To perform the method, just press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys simultaneously for 10 seconds and wait until it boots up. However, if your phone still unresponsive jump over to the next method.
Try to run your phone in Safe mode
Since the device still unable to turn on after performing previous methods then it is possible that there might be a rogue app that triggered it. In this case, we recommend you to boot your phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps in the system. If your phone turned on while in this mode, it is clear that there’s an app that you should uninstall to get rid the issue. Follow these steps to run your phone in safe mode:
- Press and hold the Power key.
- If Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and simply hold the Volume Down key.
- Continue holding the Volume Down key until the device finishes rebooting.
- If you can see “Safe Mode” in the bottom left corner of the screen then, you may release the Volume Down key.
Assuming the phone boots up in this mode successfully, try to reboot it in normal mode to see if it’s successful this time. If it won’t continue booting up, then you have to reboot in safe mode once again and this time try to find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it.
- From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap the desired application in the default list or tap Menu icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
- Tap Uninstall.
- Tap Uninstall again to confirm.
If the phone failed to boot in safe mode or if it still won’t boot up successfully after you uninstall some apps, try doing the next method.
Wipe the Cache Partition via Recovery Mode
System caches that are created by the firmware and some apps get corrupted from time to time and when that happens, performance-related issues may occur like this. Well, at least it’s a possibility so we have to rule it out before we move on to the ultimate fix.
Depending on how serious this problem is, you may still be able to bring your phone to boot in recovery mode, at least it’s worth trying. If successful, try to wipe the cache partition to delete all system caches. They will be replaced with new ones when the phone successfully boots up so it’s a safe procedure to do:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
- Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
- The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
Assuming the phone successfully booted up in recovery mode but wiping the cache partition didn’t fix the issue, then move on to the next step. However, if the phone is still unresponsive even if you were trying to start it up in recovery mode, then it’s time to bring it to a tech.
Perform the Master Reset on your phone
If the phone booted up in recovery mode, you’re already halfway to fixing the problem because it shows the hardware is fine and this is a problem with the firmware. For any system related issue, the reset is the most effective method to fix them and that’s what we need to do. Unfortunately though, you won’t be able to make a backup of your important files and data because your phone won’t boot up successfully. That’s a compromise you have to do here.
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
- Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
- The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Good day,
i got the “black screen of death” i have tried the all the suggested method to get my phone to come back on but it didn’t work. When i hold the power button and the volume down button after around 10-15 seconds i feel the phone vibrate once but the screen still doesn’t come on.
Note: i have gotten the “Black screen off death 3 times before and holding down the power button and volume down button always work. Please tell me what can I do to get my Samsung S7 working again.
