Troubleshooting Galaxy Note8 that keeps rebooting by itself

The purpose of this troubleshooting guide is for us to determine what the problem with your phone is so that we can try to formulate a solution that might make the device work normally again. However, if we can determine that this problem is actually with the hardware, then the best thing to do is bring the phone back to the store so that a Samsung technician can take a look at it. Now, for you part, here’s what you need to do:

Charge your phone and observe

The purpose of this procedure is for us to know if the phone still reboots by itself even with a stable power source. This is to determine if the battery is defective or not. If the phone doesn’t reboot when connected to its charger, then it’s a problem with the battery. Unfortunately, we just can’t buy a spare battery for the Note 8 and replace the old one. You have to bring the phone back to the store and have the tech figure out what to do; the battery maybe replaced or the entire device.

However, if the phone still reboots even if it’s connected to its charger, then we have to rule out other possibilities to know why it’s doing this. To sum up what you need to do here, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Connect your phone to its charger.
  3. Turn it on.
  4. Continue using the device to see if it reboots by itself at some point.

Observe your phone in Safe mode

Assuming your Note 8 still reboots even if it’s connected to its charger, the next thing you need to do is run it in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party elements and run the phone in its bare bones. There are times when apps create some conflicts in the system and cause performance related issues such as slowing down and random reboots.

Follow these steps to run your device in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

Continue to use your phone while in this mode and if the random reboots disappear, then it’s clear enough that your third-party apps have something to do with this problem. Find out which of those apps is causing the issue and uninstall it.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

If the phone still reboots in safe mode or after you’ve uninstalled some of the apps you suspect, then it’s time to look at this problem from a different perspective.

Run phone in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition

After doing all the steps above and the problem still continues, then there’s a chance that this is a firmware problem especially if it started without apparent reason or cause. By wiping the cache partition, you’re actually deleting all system caches so that they’ll be replaced with new ones. Sometimes system caches get corrupted and when the firmware continues to use them, performance issues may occur. Follow these steps to delete and replace old system caches:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Continue your observation after doing this procedure and if the problem continues, try the next method.

Reset All Settings of your Note8

This procedure will bring the phone back to its default factory settings to rule out the possibility that the problem is simply due to some incorrect settings or misconfiguration. All your personal files and data will remain intact but all your preferences or settings will be deleted. At this point, there’s no need to backup your data:

  1. From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  2. Navigate: Settings Settings icon > Backup and reset.
  3. From the Reset section, tap Reset settings.
  4. Review the info then tap RESET SETTINGS.
  5. If presented, enter the current PIN, password, or pattern.
  6. To confirm, review the info then tap RESET SETTINGS.

If the phone still restarts by itself after this, then you don’t have much of an option but to do the master reset.

Backup your files and reset your Note8

This is your last resort and if the issue continues after doing this, then you have to bring the phone to the store so that the tech will take care of the problem for you. By doing the Master Reset, you’re bringing the phone back to its factory default settings and all your files and data will be deleted. Therefore, before you actually reset your Note 8, make sure you make a backup of your important files as you may not be able to recover them once they’re deleted. After the backup, take note of your Google ID and password as you will be using that to setup your phone. Or better yet, disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your google account from your phone. This would prevent you from getting locked out of your device after the reset. Once every is set and ready, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
