Make Free International Calls With These Video Chat Apps For Android

When you’re on an international trip, we all know the kind of toll the phone bill can have on the user. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to find ways to avoid paying these hefty fees. This can be done via VoIP services that are available in abundance out there. However, a better alternative in our opinion is to get video chat apps. Not only are there some quality apps in the marketplace, but video chat apps also have some very obvious advantages over standard voice calling or VoIP calling. Keeping this in mind, we are going to talk about a few apps that will help you reach your loved ones without spending a dime.

Video calling is not a new concept and has been around for quite some time. However, it’s only now that this feature has become a core feature of most modern day messaging apps, which makes the market even tougher as the competition increases. Several of the chat apps we use today come with video chat enabled by default, this means there is simply no dearth of quality apps right now. So let’s get right to it.

Google Duo

Easily one of the best video calling apps available in the market today, the cross platform video calling app, Google Duo comes with a bunch of neat features to attract the customers. It’s a free offering, and is designed by Google, which means you get the full suite of features that you would find in a standard Google app, including the UI design. The app is simple to use and well refined, making it a breeze to use. You can use this with all your contacts, although it’s important that they have Duo installed. Adoption appears to be a problem as of now, and you wouldn’t find all your contacts on Duo right away.

But if you could pick a few contacts that you frequently talk to, Google Duo is certainly the best app to use. Google claims it has the best video calling performance out there, and that’s pretty evident when you have a video conversation with friends or contacts. While the jury is out on which is the best video call client out there, Google Duo is certainly high up on the list. The app can be downloaded by devices running Android 4.1 or up. The app has been installed nearly 500 million times, which makes it incredibly popular out there.

Skype

The most loved video chat app out there, Skype is clearly one of the leaders when it comes to voice calling. Although its popularity is diminishing with the presence of other players, it still has a lot of users who rely on it for regular video calling. The fact that Skype is now owned by Microsoft meant that there were a few changes on board, although they don’t come in the way of everyday usage. One thing customers will notice about Skype is the all new mobile UI they’ve developed. If you’re a frequent user of the service, you will notice a feature popularly known in the marketplace as “Stories”. This basically allows users to post text or photo updates that will disappear within 7 days. Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook etc have this feature, although Snapchat was the app that started it all off.

As for the video call clarity, Skype is high up on the list, and will not disappoint customers. The thing with video call offerings is that the app itself doesn’t necessarily have much to do with your call clarity as it’s the internet speed that determines these things. In any case, if you haven’t tried Skype before, we strongly suggest you give it a try.

LINE

This is slightly different from Duo or Skype as it is a standalone instant messaging application. To use the app, it is important that both parties have it installed. The app is popular in some regions of the world, so don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of it yet. However, it is the number one app in over 50 countries. Pretty much like any other chat app, Line comes with individual messaging as well as group chats, giving you the liberty to talk however you want. It also has exciting stickers that you can share with your contacts, which complements the user experience aspect. The app also has a PC app, with messages syncing seamlessly in real time. So you can conveniently pick up your conversations on the PC.

The developers recommend using Line on Android 4.1 or above for optimum performance. It has already been downloaded nearly a billion times, which makes it immensely popular in the marketplace. The app is free to download, so be sure to check it out.

WeChat

One of the most popular chat apps in Asia, WeChat has a plethora of features to attract users. In addition to offering video and audio calls for free, the app can also call actual phone numbers in some regions for a nominal fee. This feature makes it one of the most versatile IM clients available in the marketplace. The app also offers the ability to make payments within the app, although this feature is only available in China as of now. Barring all the fancy features that the app offers, WeChat is pretty decent alternative to other video calling apps. It is available all over the world, and requires your contacts to have a WeChat account to make or receive calls. The app also comes with a desktop client, allowing seamless syncing with your smartphone.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger is one of the most popular IM clients out there, and since it comes from Facebook, the chances are that practically every user has tried it out at least once. It offers excellent video and audio calling services. In my experience, Messenger video calls have been seamless and offer amazing clarity. As we’ve mentioned above, if you’ve got a decent internet connection, these video chat apps won’t let you down. Messenger is also a fantastic app to have if you just want to keep in touch with your loved ones on Facebook. It offers extensive chat features, with the inclusion of a handful of stickers to improve your interaction with your friends. Given the popularity Facebook enjoys, it’s no surprise that the app has been installed nearly 5 billion times from the Google Play Store. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t already.

  1. Hey, all of the above apps are good but mainly used for social and casual interactions. But for business meetigs, I would recommend, using apps like R-HUB HD video conferencing servers for conducting video calls from anywhere anytime. It works from behind the firewall, hence better security.
