As per a new report by Korean source ET News, LG is preparing to supply flexible OLED display panels to Apple for the iPhone XII in 2024. It is likely that this move was prompted by Samsung’s steep pricing for its OLED panels which is estimated to have touched $100 for the iPhone X and potentially even higher for the iPhone XS Max. Having a second supplier will level the playing field somewhat for Apple as the two regional rivals vie for Apple’s orders.
As of right now, Samsung is the sole display supplier for the iPhone X lineup, including the iPhone XS Max which is due for a refresh later this year. LG displays have been used in the past as replacement for iPhone X repairs, but the announcement of LG’s new E6 line in its Korean production facility may finally mean securing bigger orders for the iPhone XII next year. This move is also expected to increase the average selling price of the company’s displays by 10%.
LG has some work still left to do, though, as its production unit still cannot churn out OLED displays in the quantity that Apple requires. All of this is hoped to change come next year when Apple hopefully gears up for a major refresh of the iPhone lineup. As far as smartphone displays are concerned, Apple is still considered to be playing catchup with the competition, particularly the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, and others.
