Lenovo Smart Display

First up on our list is the Lenovo Smart Display. This smart assistant speaker runs off of Google’s own Google Assistant technology, which is essentially an AI-first assistant. That means Google Assistant is really good at learning your habits, and providing you recommendations based off of that. It’s also one of the few voice assistants that are able to joke around you because of that built-in AI technology.

One of the neat things about the Lenovo Smart Display is that it has an 8-inch touchscreen display built-in. That means that Google Assistant will be able to do a bunch of other really cool things as well — you’ll be able to make video calls with friends and family, watch a movie, or even pull up a YouTube video of a recipe that you’re trying to make! You could even pull up the video feed of the baby’s room or other areas around your home.

The Lenovo Smart Display is also one of the few smart assistant speakers that have a really good speaker — that means it’ll be able to recognize your voice without an issue, and you’ll get crystal clear sound quality in phone calls or when playing music.

Now, the one “con” to the Lenovo Smart Display is that it does run on Google Assistant, for which there are a substantial amount of privacy concerns for. Google Assistant is an AI-first product, so it does collect a lot of information about you and your habits in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the service, so there is that to keep in mind.

Amazon Echo Show

Next up on our list is the Amazon Echo Show. In function, it’s essentially the same thing as the Lenovo Smart Display, but instead, it uses the Alexa voice assistant. That said, you can do many of the same things that the Lenovo Smart Display can, like “Alexa, what’s the weather look like on Wednesday?” or “Alexa, what does my calendar look like this weekend?” There are countless other commands, but that gives you a small idea.

Now, one of the neat things about the Echo Show and Alexa is that you can add Alexa Skills to add countless other functions to the smart assistant speaker. These are actions added and created by the Alexa community, allowing you to make the Echo Show a whole lot more versatile. These are in addition to all the abilities that the 10-inch display brings to the device, such as video calling, the capability to watch movies and pull up video feeds, etc.

Amazon’s Echo Show or Alexa voice assistant is still a bit of a privacy concern, but possibly not nearly as much, at least in the world’s eyes. Google has a lot of information about you, and it’s scary — Amazon doesn’t have nearly as much, which makes Alexa a more optimal choice. Not only that, but Amazon has increased their privacy and security practices since they have gotten in trouble in the past.

One of the major benefits to the Echo Show are the premium speakers built inside. These are never before seen speakers in such a small device, offering you crisp and clear audio quality when streaming music, playing movies, or getting on a phone or video call with friends and family! That said, the Echo Show is slightly more expensive than the $200 Lenovo Smart Display at $230, but it’s well worth it!

Verdict

As you can see, both Amazon and Lenovo offer excellent smart assistant speakers; however, we think the Amazon Echo Show takes the cake here. They not only offer some better privacy practices when it comes to the Alexa voice assistant, but you also get more premium hardware for a clearer picture and better sound quality.
