If you’ve followed tech at all the last few weeks, the problems that Huawei has been going through is no secret to you. That said, a new report shows that Huawei could offer itself and its users some stress-relief with concrete plans for a new operating system in just a couple of months.
With plans to to launch in August or September, Huawei will be looking at releasing what it will be calling ‘Oak OS.’
This report comes by way of the Global Times, saying that it would be called “HongMeng OS” in China, but will have that ‘Oak OS’ name in other markets. As you might expect, Huawei is intensively testing the OS to make sure it’s ready for prime time.
With such short notice, we don’t know how well Oak OS is going to perform out of the gate, but a report from Financial Times already cites some worries:
[Oak OS] “is likely to have more bugs in it than the Google one, and so could put Huawei phones more at risk of being hacked, not least by China.”
That’s a big concern, but Google is working with Huawei to keep millions of Huawei users safe from security threats. Again, from the Financial Times, citing a Google statement:
“Our focus is protecting the security of Google users on the millions of existing Huawei handsets in the US and around the world.”
We’ll have to see what Huawei is going to do, but for now, Oak OS is starting to sound like a poorly thrown together operating system that could potentially put millions’ security at risk.
