How To Fix The Samsung Galaxy A9 With Black Screen of Death Issue

Problem: My phone has a black screen and won’t respond to anything I do. It has not been cracked or anything. I have dropped it a couple times previously but never damaged the screen. Anyways the screen started turning white or green and fuzzy then black. Would come back to normal and then do it again. Finally it went black again and it’s been that way ever since. The lights still come on ,I can hear the volume when I press buttons I sometimes can hear my notifications coming through but I can’t see anything. I tried doing a recovery boot and it worked so I factory reset it. It worked fine for about 2 hours and then did the same thing again. Now I can’t get it to boot in any mode. I don’t think there’s any water damage as I can’t recall ever dropping it in water or anything. What do you guys think? I can’t afford a new phone right now. Is it ready for the graveyard or is it fixable? Plz help. The phone is an A9

Solution: One of the common issues that an Android device will experience is the black screen of death. This is characterized by the screen of the phone not displaying anything but the device may or may not still be getting notifications or even get calls. In most cases the problem is caused by a software glitch which can be easily fixed on your end. There are however cases when the problem is caused by a faulty hardware component in which case a trip to the service center will be required.

To troubleshoot this problem you should perform the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a soft reset

When your phone crashes the display will usually become unresponsive and won’t display anything. The best way to fix a system that has crashed is a soft reset. This is done by pressing and holding both power and volume down buttons for at least 10 seconds. Your phone should restart after this.

Fully charge the phone

There are instances when the black screen issue can be caused by a battery that is low on charge. To eliminate this possibility you should connect the phone to its wall charger then let it charge. When the LED is glowing green then the phone is now fully charged.

Start the Galaxy A9 in Safe Mode

When the phone is started in Safe Mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. This makes it easy for you to check if an app you downloaded is causing this problem.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

In case the display works when the phone is started in this mode then there’s a possibility that an app you downloaded is causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the A9

There are instances when the phone will accumulate a lot of temporary system data. When this data gets corrupted you will usually experience issues with the phone such as this. To eliminate this possibility you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset on the A9 using the hardware keys

One last troubleshooting step that you need to do is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that your phone data will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the above troubleshooting steps fails to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component already. There’s a possibility that the display of the phone needs to be replaced. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
