How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Screen Is Black After Getting Wet

Problem: Hi, I went on a trip with my family to a resort. I took my S9+ to the pool and I tried to capture a underwater pic with it and it was hardly under water for 1 min and 6 inches below the water surface. When I took it out I saw a notification that moisture is detected and do not plug charger. I kept the phone on flight mode and did not touch it for hours. At night the notification went off and still I did not plug the charger. I was watching videos at night and suddenly the screen went black (BSOD). I read your posts and did a forced reboot and it was working again with no issues. The next day I went to office and again (BSOD). I again did a forced reboot and it was working fine. Then I received a notification for a system update, which was a security patch level. I installed the update and later the screen started to flicker. Suddenly it was all green and the phone was unresponsive. I searched for the issue on google and found your posts and tried various methods like forced reboot and then master reboot, but not helpful. Later I found that the screen looks good when the brightness is at the fullest. But when I decrease the brightness the screen has black texture on the edges and small green lines all over the screen. Also, the screen flickers for a microsecond when the power button is pressed to unlock the phone. I checked the LDI and it also looks white. Please help me to figure out the issue.

Solution: if this issue occurred right after the phone got wet then there’s a possibility that water has entered the device and is now causing this problem. What you should do first right now is tom make sure to remove any presence of liquid in the phone by following the steps listed below.

  • Wipe the exterior part of the phone with a microfiber cloth until it is dry.
  • Remove the SIM card and microSD card ( if your phone has one).
  • Place the phone in a bag of rice or silica gel for at least 48 hours. Moisture present inside the phone will be absorbed out.

Once the phone is dry try to check if the problem still occurs. If it does then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below which are aimed to check if the problem is caused by a software glitch.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing that you will need to do in this particular case is a soft reset. This will usually fix issues caused by minor software glitches as it will refresh the phone software. This is also called as a simulated battery pull as it disconnects the phone from the battery.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Check if the issue still occur.

Check if the issue occurs  in Safe Mode

Another factor that can cause this problem is an app you downloaded to the device. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it’s likely it is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

The phone system cached data is used to speed up the access to your phone apps. Sometimes this data can get corrupted which results in issues occuring on the device. To check if a corrupted cached data is causing the problem you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the problem still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Do not install any apps after the reset has completed. Try to check first if the phone works normally. In case it doesn’t then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component already. The best thing you can do right now is to have the phone repaired at a service center.
