How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Auto Rotate Stopped Working

Problem: I have been using my Samsung Galaxy S9+ for around a month now. I use it a lot, mainly for gaming. Within the last week, I noticed that the auto rotate stopped working. I do download a lot of videos and enjoy switching between landscape and portrait. Yesterday I noticed that the phone started switching on and off randomly. I looked at your site and performed the suggestions you posted (clearing memory, going to safe mode, wiping cache etc). It’s still doing it. It could possibly be the battery, as I leave it on charge a lot, so it is the next thing I’m trying, but any other suggestions would be welcome.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

What you should do right now is to check if a software glitch is causing this problem by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing that you will need to do in this particular case is a soft reset. This will usually fix issues caused by minor software glitches as it will refresh the phone software. This is also called as a simulated battery pull as it disconnects the phone from the battery.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Check if any of the the issues still occur.

Check if the issue occurs  in Safe Mode

Another factor that can cause this problem is an app you downloaded to the device. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issues do not occur in this mode then it’s likely that the problem is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

The phone system cached data is used to speed up the access to your phone apps. Sometimes this data can get corrupted which results in issues occurring on the device. To check if a corrupted cached data is causing the problem you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the problem still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Do not install any apps after the reset has completed. Try to check first if the phone works normally. In case it doesn’t then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component already. The best thing you can do right now is to have the phone repaired at a service center.
