How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Music App Can’t Access Data In Micro SD Card

Problem: Hello Droid Guy; I’ve had a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 for almost 2 months  now, and only very rarely had problems with it – that is, until about 2 weeks ago, when I opened the Samsung Music app and saw ‘no albums added’. All of the music I had saved to my SD card seemed to be gone. I went to the Gallery app and got the same thing – everything saved to the SD was gone, everything on the phone still showed up. As a last attempt, I opened the My Files app: the SD card was still there and I was still able to access all the media on it. So the phone knows the SD is still in, knows it’s not empty, and can access the files on it, just not through the two apps I used the most. For what it’s worth, I swapped out to another card and it seemed to work. The sample files I put on this card showed up in Music and Gallery. I also plugged the phone into my PC and was able to read both cards through the phone. I could move files to and from the card as normal this way. So I’m confused. If the SD card I’ve been using had disappeared from My Files as well, I would simply chalk it up to a faulty card and replace it. But being that the phone *can* still interface with it, I’m not sure what to do. (I should also mention: yes I did have another SD card laying around which was convenient, but the one I’d been using was a 128gb while the backup is 64… suffice to say, I’d much rather get the 128gb card working as intended again.) Any insights you may have would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it’s best to make sure that the device is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Perform a soft reset

The first thing you will need to do in this case is a soft reset which should fix minor software related glitches.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Once this is done try to check if the issue still occurs.

Try clearing the cache and data of the Music and Gallery apps

Another factor that can cause this particular problem is corrupt temporary data within the Music and Gallery apps. You can check if this is what’s causing the problem by clearing the cache and data of these apps.

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > Apps.
  • Tap the desired application ( Music and Gallery) in the default list.
  • To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  • Tap Storage > CLEAR CACHE > CLEAR DATA > DELETE

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

Sometimes a third party app you downloaded will cause issues on the phone when they are installed. To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Format the micro SD Card

One factor that can cause this problem is a glitch in the micro SD card that you are using. To eliminate this possibility you will need to backup the contents of the card then format it using your phone.

  • Open the Settings app followed by Device Maintenance. Tap on Storage to bring up details of both internal and external storage
  • Tap on SD card and open Storage settings from the overflow menu in the top right corner.
  • Tap on Format
  • You will see a prompt stating that formatting will erase all data on the microSD card and that you should do a backup if you want to avoid data loss. Tap on Format to go ahead.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
