How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Mobile Data Disconnects When Display Is Off

Problem: My Galaxy Note 9, 512 GB, upgraded to Android 9.0, has 2 sim cards in it. SIM1 is used for its Mobile Data, and SIM2 for calls and SMS. I use Torrent Apps to download different kinds of files, normally taking between 20 to 60 minutes long. Besides, I use other Apps to show the downloading speed in the notification bar. The problem is that when it starts downloading , I usually turn the display off. When I turn it on again after say 10 minutes, I find the downloads have stopped and the downloading speed on the notification bar shows 0KB! It seems the mobile data gets disconnected after turning the phone’s display OFF. Please kindly help me fix this issue.

Solution: The mobile data of the phone should not get disconnected whenever the display turns off. If this problem occurred right after the Android Pie update then there’s a possibility that this is caused by a software glitch.

Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it’s best to check if a new software update is available. It’s best to download and install the update first.

Turn off power saving mode

One of the factors that can cause this problem is if the phone is in power saving mode. While this setting is off by default it might be turned on right now. When this setting is on the background network usage is turned off which means that it will prevent apps that are running in the background from using Wi-Fi or mobile data.

For Medium power saving mode:

  • Tap Medium power saving.
  • Review the setting changes then tap Apply to turn on.
  • To turn off, navigate: Apps > Settings Settings icon > Device care > Battery.
  • Tap Power mode.
  • Tap Optimized.

For Maximum power saving mode:

  • Tap MAX from the Power saving mode section.
  • Review the setting changes then tap APPLY to turn on.
  • Note  Adjust settings as desired then tap Apply (upper-right).
  • To turn off, navigate: Apps > Settings Settings icon > Device care > Battery.
  • Tap Power mode.
  • Tap Optimized.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

Sometimes an app you downloaded can cause this particular problem. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case you don’t experience the problem in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Corrupted cached data can also cause this particular problem. To eliminate this possibility you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the phone.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset using the hardware keys

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this as it will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the phone.

Once the reset is complete it’s very likely that the problem will be resolved.
