Problem: Hello. I hope you can help me. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Some time ago I accidentally upgraded the os , for a while I ignored the software update it asked for after that. However, I started experiencing rapid battery drain. I did some research and did the software update. It completed and said it was successful. But I kept getting that it needed the software update again. I did this 2 more times and still got the software update. i ignored it for a while, but then started getting com.android.phone has stopped or facebook has stopped, randomly. Over the past couple days the phone is now either randomly rebooting on its own, or shutting off on its own with the battery still reading a good amount (anywhere from 76 to 93%). So this morning I did the software update again, it was successful. But the phone is still draining at a fast rate and either rebooting (when rebooted it will tell me the battery is critically low) or just plain shutting off. I cleared the cache partition and was in the process of updating all apps as you suggested in one of your posts when it just shut off again (the back of the phone was running hot?). As it is right now. I can get a bit of reading done once I turn off wifi setting, but I certainly cannot play games or leave the phone on to be used as a phone because of this. If I restart the phone and discharge the static excess I can get as much as 25% more on the battery. There are no issues charging as I bought a new usb cord and I have a wall charger on order, but I believe my problems are beyond just battery replacement. I’m afraid to do a full factory reset, and read somewhere that that did not help other users, so I’m just totally lost. I know nothing of flashing roms or rooting phones. Any other advice you can give?

Do a soft reset
A soft reset is usually performed to refresh the phone software. This action usually fixes minor software glitches which could cause issues on the phone.
- Press and hold the volume down button and don’t release it.
- Now press and hold the Power key while holding down the volume down button.
- Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

- When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone
There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.
- Turn off the phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
- An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
- Press Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Check if the issue still occurs.
Perform a factory reset
In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.
- Turn off the phone.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Do not install any apps in your phone once the reset has completed. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. In case it does then you will need to have the phone checked at a service center.
