How To Fix Samsung Galaxy A6 Will Not Fully Charge

Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy A6 cell phone that will not charge past about 85%.  My old battery was draining fast and suddenly wouldn’t charge beyond about 75-80%.  I had the battery replaced at a service center; new battery charged ONE time to 100%; then wouldn’t charge past about 85%.  Replaced the battery AGAIN; this time they gave it to me at 100%; did a full discharge till it shut down and recharged ONCE to 100% (but it took about 5 hours to charge the last 10%); now the second new battery will not charge past 87%.  Both new batteries DO last a lot longer. Once the phone hits about 85-87% the screen shows “charging” and about “20-30 minutes to full charge”, but there is little to no current going in (tested at repair place and using “ampere” app). I’ve tried multiple outlets, multiple chargers and multiple cords, power bank, car charger, charging while on and while off.  It consistently “sticks” at 87% no matter how long it’s plugged in and supposedly charging. I’ve wiped the cache partition a few times with no change. Any more ideas? I suppose I could possibly have received TWO defective batteries in a row, but odds are unlikely. Only thing left I know to do is a factory reset and hope for the best. Is there anything else I can try first?  If the factory reset doesn’t work, what could be wrong with the phone/battery?? Is it fixable? I really do NOT want to purchase a new ridiculously expensive phone. HELP please!!!

Solution: Since you have already replaced the battery twice then we can eliminate this as a possible culprit that’s causing the problem. Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Try cleaning the charging port of the phone using a can of compressed air making sure that any dirt or debris stuck in the port is removed. Once this is done use a different charging cord and wall charger to charge the phone. If it still does not fully charge then the best way to proceed in this case is to check if a software glitch is causing the problem by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Start the phone in Safe Mode

Sometimes an app you recently downloaded can cause this problem. To check if this is the case then you should start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When Samsung appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode on the device.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the Galaxy A6

There are instances when the temporary system data of the phone gets corrupted. When this happens your device might have a problem booting. To check if this is what’s happening right now you should try wiping the cache partition of the phone.

  • Switch OFF your phone using the Power button.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • After the Samsung Logo, an Android Logo screen will appear, now tap on the screen.
  • Once in Android Recovery, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “wipe cache partition”
  • Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  • After the process is done, ensure “Reboot system now” and press “Power”

Check if the issue still occurs.

Factory reset the Galaxy A6 using the hardware keys

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that your phone data will be deleted in the process so make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding.

  • Turn OFF your phone using the Power button.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • After the Samsung Logo, an Android Logo screen will appear, now tap on the screen.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Do not install any apps in your phone after the reset. What you should do first is to try to check if the phone will fully charge. If the issue persists then this might already be caused by a faulty hardware component, possibly the power IC. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
