How to troubleshooting Pixel 2 with Messenger app that keeps crashing
Before you troubleshoot Messenger, it’s better to know if Facebook crashes as well because if it does, it’s possible that the problem isn’t with it but with the main app. But assuming that Facebook doesn’t crash, here’s what you need to do about the Messenger:
First solution: Clear cache and data of Messenger app
Doing this will reset the app back to its default settings or configuration. It will also delete the cache created by the system for the app as well as its temporary data files. If it’s just a problem with the app, then this procedure is more than enough to fix it.
- From a Home screen, tap the Arrow Up icon to display all apps.
- Navigate: Settings > Apps & notifications.
- Tap See all xx apps.
- Locate then select Messenger.
- Tap Force stop.
- Tap OK.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Tap Clear data.
- Tap OK.
After this, open Messenger to know if it still crashes or shows the error message. If the problem continues, then you will have to do the next procedure.
Second solution: Uninstall and reinstall Messenger
To address possible compatibility issues, updating an app would be enough but in this case, I would suggest you uninstall the app to remove all its associations with other apps and the firmware. Then download it from the Play Store to make sure you have the latest Messenger version on your device.
- From a Home screen, tap the Arrow icon to display all apps.
- Navigate: Settings > Apps & notifications .
- Tap See all ‘xx’ apps.
- Tap Messenger.
- Tap Uninstall.
- Tap OK to confirm.
- Open Play Store.
- Search for Messenger and select it.
- Tap Install.
Based on experience, when this app crashes, the problem is limited to it or to the main app, which is Facebook. However, if the issue continues after doing the procedure above, then I suggest you reset your phone to make sure it’s not with the firmware. Before the reset, make sure you backup all your important files and data so that they won’t be deleted.
- Ensure the device is powered off.
- Press and hold the Power+Volume Down buttons until bootloader mode (image of an Android with Start above it) appears, then release.
- Select Recovery mode.
- Use the Volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the Power button to select.
- The device will flash the Google start screen momentarily and then restarts in Recovery mode.
- If presented with an image of a broken Android with “No Command” shown on the screen, press and hold the Power button. Press the Volume Up button once then release the Power button.
- From the Android Recovery screen, select Wipe data/factory reset.
- Select Yes and then allow several minutes for the factory data reset process to complete.
- Select Reboot system now.
- Allow several minutes for the factory data reset and reboot processes to complete.
