How To Fix LG V40 ThinQ Will Not Stay Connected To Wi-Fi With No Internet

Problem: My wife just purchased a new phone (the LG V40 ThinQ) for the purpose of having a good camera phone while on vacation. We have discovered this week that it has a serious flaw. The phone will not stay connected to a WiFi access point if the access point doesn’t have an internet connection. One might wonder why you would want to connect to a WiFi access point that doesn’t have an internet connection. The reason is to access the intranet (the local network). You see we are on a cruise ship that offers free messaging between guests among other features using their Intranet via WiFi (no internet access needed). We find that the V40 ThinQ will only stay connected to the WiFi access point for about 40 seconds before it automatically disconnects because it has determined that it can’t access the internet. I have searched and tested every setting to try to find a way around this behavior, but I have had no luck. It seems this phone will only let you keep a connection to a WiFi access point that has an internet connection event if all you want to access is the local intranet.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on  the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing you need to try in this case is a soft reset. This will refresh your phone software and will usually fix most minor software glitches. The soft reset is done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release. When the phone turns on check if it the issue still occurs.

Reset the network settings

If you are still having issues connecting to the Wi-Fi network then you should try to reset the network settings. Take note that your Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular settings will be reset to their default values when you perform this step.

  • From a Home screen, navigate: Settings  > System .
  • Tap Restart & reset
  • Tap Network settings reset.
  • Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  • Tap Reset Settings.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

Sometimes the problem can be caused by an app that you recently downloaded You can check if this is what’s causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be  caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • Use the Volume down button to select Wipe Cache .
  • Press the Power button to confirm.
  • Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Allow several minutes for the process to complete.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • ‘Factory data reset’ appears.
  • Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to confirm.
  • Erase all user data and restore default settings’ appears.
  • Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone just yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.

If the above steps fails  to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by a software glitch which should be fixed with a future update.
