How To Fix LG V40 ThinQ Microphone Volume Is Low

Problem: I have a Verizon LG V40 ThinQ unlocked. I am using it in Canada on the 711 Speakout which uses the Rogers Wireless network, but this is not relevant. The problem is the software that runs the phone’s microphone (lower, next to the headphone jack on bottom of phone. When I make a call, the microphone is set to such a low volume that only if I place my mouth right at the mic hole and yell, will only a whisper of my voice transmit to the other phone. If I blow into the mic hole, the rushing wind sound is transmitted as a whisper. If I speak normally on the phone, no sound is transmitted to the other phone. I can hear the other person perfectly. If I place the speaker on, then I can speak normally into the phone and the microphone now transmits the sound to the other phone as if the speaker phone is off, however, the voice of the other person can now be heard loud, ambiently like a normal speaker phone. I have tried recording my voice on the HD recorder, and playback is completely normal, so it appears that the mic hardware is working fine. It is only a problem on telephony. If I use the Magic Jack app, or Line messaging and telephony, over WIFI, same problem. If I use the preinstalled phone app over the phone GSM network, same problem, but not the HD recorder- it has no trouble. By this method, I surmised that the issue is with the software, which incidentally does not give a microphone volume adjustable setting to the user, so the only control I can tweak to make my telephony work, is using the speaker button, which boosts the mic volume from nothing to normal. This problem appears to be a Verizon one, because there is a forum at Verizon on this issue, but it remains unsolved. I want to point out that there are other LG users outside of the Verizon forum that also have had this issue. I have disabled google, so ok google is not on. Although this Verizon phone is unlocked, I have to point out that when I set up the phone with my Canada 711 SIM card, a msg came up saying: This is not a Verizon SIM. The same happens when I restart my phone. Then when the phone is fully booted up, everything that I have tested, incl. phone network, wifi, camera, flashlight, some apps, all work normally. The only issue is telephony with the mic set at a far too low volume, for all telephony apps. I was wondering if you can help me get to the bottom of this? It’s appears to be a software bug.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Since this phone is originally locked on the Verizon network I suggest you use a computer to update the phone software.

  • Download, install and open the compatible software for the LG Bridge from to your PC.
  • Connect the device using the provided USB cable to the PC.
  • On the device drag down the notification panel and tap USB notification >  Media device (MTP).
  • On the PC, in the LG Bridge app, on the Software update tab, tap Software update > the app will check for an update.
  • If an update is available, a message will appear about the update. Click Start to install the update. Do not remove the device from the PC until the update is complete.

Once the phone is running on the latest software version it’s time to perform the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to do a soft reset. This will refresh your phone software and will usually fix most minor software glitches. The soft reset is done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

Sometimes the problem can be caused by an app that you recently downloaded You can check if this is what’s causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be  caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition

Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data so it’s best to backup the phone data before proceeding.

  • Back up data on the internal memory before performing a factory reset.
  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE – Delete all – RESET

You can also perform the factory reset using the hardware keys.

  • Backup all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device

Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone just yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.

In case the issue still persists even after performing the steps listed above then this could already be caused by  faulty hardware component. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
