How To Fix LG G7 ThinQ Receiving Text Messages Twice

Problem: Hi! I got a new LG G7 ThinQ this summer when I signed up for T-Mobile. My husband did as well. They switched over our phone numbers and right away I began to get my own text messages twice in group messaging (it shows my own phone number in the group messaging). This did not affect my husband’s phone at all. I have been dealing with getting my own sent text messages for about 6 months (as I had stopped in T-Mobile multiple times and they couldn’t figure it out). Finally, last week the manager thought my phone was faulty. I got a new LG G7. However, the issue was not fixed. I cleared my cache today and when I sent a test text message to two people it did not duplicate. However, when they texted me back it reverted back to adding my phone number in the group message (and when I respond it shows my text message twice once again). Also, when people send me a picture it shows up in a completely separate text message box from their normal texting with me. I look forward to your response and thank you so much for the help!!

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

This particular problem is most likely caused by a software glitch which we will be trying to eliminate first by performing the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to refresh the phone software by doing a soft reset. While this is mainly done for a device that is unresponsive it is also recommended for this particular problem.

  • Press and hold the Volume Down button (left edge) and the Power button (right-side) until the device powers off (approximately 5 seconds) then release.
  • Allow several seconds for the reboot process to complete.

Once the phone starts try to check if the issue still occurs.

Clear the cache and data of the text messaging app

The next step is to eliminate any corrupt data that the text messaging app might have accumulated as this could be causing the problem.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab > Apps & notifications.
  • Tap App info.
  • Tap the filter to select the following: All, Enabled, Disabled
  • Tap the desired app, then Storage.
  • Tap Clear cache or Clear Data then YES.

Once the above steps have been performed try to check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There’s a possibility that an app you have downloaded is causing this problem. If you have downloaded an app before experiencing this problem then that app could be the culprit. To check if the problem is caused by an app you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Make sure the device is powered off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button until the System recovery screen displays then release both buttons.
  • Select Safe mode. Use the Volume buttons to highlight the option and the Power button to select.
  • The device starts up with ‘Safe mode’ displayed in the lower-left.

Try to use the camera in this mode. If the phone does not turn off then the problem is most likely caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Sometimes the phone’s cached data can get corrupted and when this happens certain issues can occur on the device. To eliminate this possibility you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before performing this step as it will be deleted in the process.

Factory reset from the settings menu

  • From the Home screen go to Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE > Delete all > RESET

Factory reset using the hardware keys

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Check if the issue occurs in only a particular area. It’s best to go to an area where the signal strength the phone is getting is at its maximum level then see if the same issue occurs. If it doesn’t then the problem could be signal related.
  • Try using a different SIM card in your phone.

If the issue still persists then you will have to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
