How To Fix LG G7 ThinQ Not Reading SIM Card

Problem: I bought this phone last week knowing it was locked with BELL, I am with Virgin Mobile, but I was buying the phone off a friend for a good price so I figured I’d just pay one of those online services to unlock it for 20-30 bucks, and I did that but still when I try to put my Virgin Mobile SIM card into it, I get nothing, the APN seems to be locked onto the old BELL one, and even if I create a new APN nothing changes, what should I do? I already factory reset the phone (before I ever tried to out my SIM into it) but I fear that since it is locked to that service provider I won’t be able to access texting and calling on my new phone.

Solution: Before proceeding with the troubleshooting process it’s best to make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it in your phone before proceeding with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Insert the original network SIM card of the phone

To check if the problem is caused by the a hardware/ software glitch or a failed unlocking process you will need to insert a Bell SIM card in the phone. In case the phone works with this SIM then you will have to get back with the unlocking service provider as the phone has not been properly unlocked.

Clean the SIM slot

In case the issue still persists even with a Bell SIM card in the phone then the next step is to use a can of compressed air to clean the SIM slot of the phone. This will remove any dirt or debris stuck in it which could be causing the problem. Reinsert the Virgin Mobile SIM card once this is done.

Start the phone in Safe Mode

The next step is to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem. This is done by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This reverts the phone back to its original factory condition and is a great way to check if the problem is caused by a software glitch. Since your phone data will be deleted in the process make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

In case the problem still persists even after performing the steps listed above then you should bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
