How To Fix Huawei P20 Black Screen of Death Issue

One major issue that you might encounter on an Android device is when the screen does not seem to work and just displays a black screen. This is usually called as the Black Screen of Death issue as you will not be able to see anything on the device. If this issue happened after you dropped your phone then it’s very likely that this is caused by a damaged hardware component which will most likely need to be repaired at a service center. If this issue just happened randomly then there’s a possibility that it is caused by a software glitch. Listed below are the necessary troubleshooting steps that you need to do for this particular problem.

Fully charge the phone battery

One of the main causes as to why the phone screen will not work or why the phone does not seem to turn on is because its battery is drained. To eliminate this possibility you will have to make sure that the battery is fully charged.

  • Clean the charging port of the phone using a can of compressed air making sure to remove any dirt or debris stuck in it.
  • Fully charge the phone with a charging cord and wall charger that have been tested to work on another device.
  • If the phone does not charge with a wall charger then try charging the device from a computer USB port.

Once the battery is fully charged check if the screen of the phone will work.

Perform a soft reset

The best thing you will need to do is to refresh the phone software by doing a soft reset. This will usually resolve issue caused by minor software glitches.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Start the phone in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this particular issue. To check if this is the case you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Power off the phone by holding down the power button for a few seconds.
  • Press and hold the power button and release it when you see the Huawei logo on screen.
  • After releasing the Power key, immediately press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Keep holding the Volume key till the phone completely boots up.
  • Once the phone boots up,  “Safe mode” should be appeared on the bottom of the screen

If the screen works in this mode then the problem could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off your phone.
  • Press and hold Volume UP button along with Power button on your  device simultaneously for a few seconds
  • The phone will enter the stock recovery mode
  • Use volume buttons to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’ and use power key to select it
  • Reboot the system once the process is completed

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the Huawei P20  black screen of death issue then chances are this is caused by a system glitch. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data.

  • Turn off your phone.
  • Press and hold Volume UP button along with Power button on your  device simultaneously for a few seconds
  • The phone will enter the stock recovery mode
  • Use volume buttons to highlight  select wipe cache/factory reset and use power key to select it
  • Reboot the system once the process is completed
