How To Fix ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED Error on Windows 10

There have been reports from Windows 10 users getting an Err_Internet_Disconnected error message commonly seen on Google Chrome browsers and sometimes on Opera browsers. The error message can cause users to not access to the network thereby is unable to connect to a website. On Google Chrome browser the message that usually appears together with Err_Internet_Disconnected error is “Unable to connect to the Internet” and message such as “Google Chrome can’t display the webpage because your computer isn’t connected to the Internet”. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series, we are going to talk about the recommended solutions that you can do to fix Err_Internet_Disconnected error message on Windows 10.

What to do if Err_Internet_Disconnected error occurs

There are several factors that can cause Err_Internet_Disconnected error to occur such as conflicts with the Antivirus software program installed on your computer, issues with LAN or network connection to issues with the browser cookies and cache. If you are unable to visit a website in the browser but instead gets Err_Internet_Disconnected error, follow the solutions below to fix it.

Solution 1: Restart Router

There are times when Err_Internet_Disconnected error because of issues with the router. To fix this, you may need to restart your router.

To do this:

  1. Disconnect or unplug router from power source
  2. After about 5 minutes, reconnect or plug router again to power source.

After router start up finishes the process, check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected still occurs.

Solution 2: Run Internet Connections troubleshooter

Troubleshooter is a built in tool on Windows that diagnose and fixes issues, in this case issues with the internet connection thereby Internet Connection Troubleshooter process will be done.

To do this:

  1. Click Start or Windows key

    ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED

  2. Click Settings an icon that looks like a gear to open Windows Settings section

  3. At Windows Setting, click Update and Security tab

  4. Click Troubleshoot at left pane

  5. Click Additional Troubleshooters at right pane

  6. Click Internet connections under Get up and running.

  7. Click Run the troubleshooter tab. Windows will now search and detect problems at new window

  8. After Internet connection Troubleshooter process is complete and it could not identify any problem, click Close and Exit Settings Section.

    If a problem is detected, it will display recommended solutions to fix it.

Visit a website again and then check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected still occurs.

Solution 3: Configure Local Area Network (LAN) Settings

A change in the LAN network on your computer such as e proxy settings are enable can cause Err_Internet_Disconnected message to appear when you try to visit a website. To fix this, you may need to adjust the settings so that internet or wifi connection will be restored and you will now be able to visit a website without getting the error message.

To do this:

  1. Press Windows key + R on your keyboard to open RUN dialog box.
  2. At RUN dialog box, type Control Panel to open control panel window.
  3. On Control Panel window, make sure View by located at the upper right is set to Large icons.
  4. Click Internet Options
  5. At Internet Properties window, click Connections tab.
  6. Click LAN settings tab under Local Area Network (LAN) settings.
  7. Under Automatic Configurations, make sure Automatically detect settings is unchecked.
  8. Under Proxy Server, make sure Use a proxy server for your LAN is unchecked.
  9. Click OK to apply changes made and exit all windows.

Visit a website again and then check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected still occurs.

Solution 4: Reset Network Configurations

Resetting Network Configurations is another solution to fix network related problems on your internet. Performing this solution requires Administrative access on the Command prompt.

To do this:

  1. Type Command Prompt at the search bar located at the lower left
  2. Right click on Command prompt result and click Run as Administrator to allow Administrative access.
  3. Inside Command Prompt window, type the following commands and press Enter after each command.
  4. Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter
  5. Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter
  6. Type ipconfig /release and press Enter
  7. Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter
  8. Type netsh interface ipv4 reset and press Enter
  9. Type netsh interface ipv6 reset and press Enter
  10. Type reset ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter
  11. Restart Computer

Once computer completely reboots, visit a website again and then check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected still occurs.

Solution 5: Temporarily Disable Windows Firewall

Firewalls are important in protecting the computer from network related threats, however there are instances when it can cause conflicts with the internet or wi fi connection causing Err_Internet_Disconnected error to appear when trying to access a website. To fix this, try to temporarily disable firewall to check if this is the culprit.

To do this:

  1. Press Windows key + R on your keyboard to open RUN dialog box
  2. At RUN dialog box, type “Control panel” and press Enter or click OK. This will open Control Panel window
  3. At Control Panel section, make sure View by at the upper right is set to Large Icons.
  4. Click Windows Defender Firewall
  5. At left pane, click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.
  6. Make sure options “Turn off Windows Defender Firewall” in both Private and Public settings are checked or turn ON
  7. Click OK to apply changes made.
  8. Exit Control Panel window.

Visit a website again and then check if Err_Internet_Disconnected error in google chrome still occurs.

Solution 6: Temporarily Disable Antivirus Program

Antivirus program can also cause conflict causing Err_Internet_Disconnected error to appear when you try to access or visit a website. To fix this, you may need to temporarily disable antivirus program.

For Windows Defender:

  1. Click on the Start or Windows logo key located at the lower left on your windows.
  2. Click Settings which is an icon that looks like a gear. This will open Windows Settings section.
  3. At Windows settings section, click on Update and Security.
  4. Click on Windows security which is located at the left pane.
  5. Click Virus and Threat protection from the protection areas section. A new window opens.
  6. At the new window, click Manage settings from Virus and Threat Protection settings.
  7. Then, Toggle OFF Real-time protection.
  8. Restart your computer.

For AVG:

  1. Double-click on AVG icon located at on system tray
  2. Click Temporarily disable AVG protection.
  3. Select how long you want AVG to be turned off and whether you want AVG to disable its Firewall too. Click on OK to disable the antivirus program.

For McAfee:

  1. Double-click on McAfee icon located at on system tray.
  2. Click Exit.
  3. A dialog box warning you that McAfee protection will be turned off, click Yes to disable the antivirus program.

For Avast:

  1. Double-click on Avast icon located at computer system tray.
  2. Click Avast shields control.
  3. Locate the options to disable the program – the options are to disable it for 10 minutes, an hour, until the computer is restarted or permanently (until you yourself turn it back on). Select whatever option suits you best and use it to disable the program.

Visit a website again and then check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected error in google chrome still occurs.

Solution 7: Clear Google Chrome Browsing Data Cache

Google Chrome browsers usually collects information in Cache data on the PC. Information such as saved login data, browsing history, password and cookies. Although these information are important there are instances when cookies from websites that are malicious can cause internet or wi fi connection problems in browsers. To fix this, you may need to clear browsing data on the browser.

To do this:

  1. Open Google Chrome browser. It is usually located on the desktop of your computer or on the taskbar.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots located at the upper right.
  3. Click More tools from the drop down menu.
  4. Click Clear Browsing Data option. A new window opens.
  5. At new window, you can choose from the drop menu the time range from when you start experiencing the error or you can choose the ALL TIME option to clear all browsing cache which is recommended.
  6. Make sure all three options (Browsing History, Cookies and other site data and cache images and files) are checked.
  7. Click Clear Data tab to start clearing of browsing cache. Wait for the process to complete.
  8. Restart computer.

Once computer completely reboots, visit a website again and then check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected still occurs.

Solution 8: Reset Google Chrome browser

If none of the solutions mentioned above did not fix Err_Internet_Disconnected error, you may need at this time reset Google Chrome browser.

To do this:

  1. Open Google Chrome browser. It is usually located on the desktop of your computer or on the taskbar.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots located at the upper right.
  3. Click Settings from the drop down menu to open Chrome settings
  4. Scroll down and click Advanced.
  5. At left pane, click Reset and clean up under Advanced section.
  6. Click Restore settings to their original defaults.
  7. Click Reset Settings tab to confirm at prompt message that appears. Waif for reset process to complete.

Visit a website again and then check if error message Err_Internet_Disconnected still occurs.
