How to fix Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with “Unfortunately, Camera has stopped” error (easy steps)

How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note 8 with “Camera has stopped” error

I understand that you may be hesitant to do some basic troubleshooting procedures especially if you don’t understand what you’re doing. I will try to explain better every procedure here but if that doesn’t help, then maybe you should just bring your phone to the service center so that a Samsung technician can check it up for you. For those who are willing to troubleshoot however, then continue reading as I will walk you through every step of the way…

Open camera in Safe mode

There’s a possibility that this problem is due to a third-party app considering the fact that there are tons of apps out there that use the camera. It is inevitable that some of those apps have bugs that their developers don’t know about yet until some users discover them. So, run your phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps and this is how you do it:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

Booting the phone in safe mode alone won’t fix the problem, you have to do more to fix this problem but you should try opening the camera in this environment and see if it would still crash. If the error doesn’t show up, then it’s obvious now that a third-party app or two is causing the problem. You need to find that app and uninstall it to fix this problem:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display preinstalled apps.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.
  7. Reboot your phone back in normal mode.

However, if the error still shows up even in this mode, then move on to the next step.

Reset All Settings

It’s also possible that apps crash due to incorrect settings. If the problem occurs after you’ve changed a setting or two and you can no longer remember what you did, then this procedure will rectify the problem:

  1. From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  2. Navigate: Settings Settings icon > Backup and reset.
  3. From the Reset section, tap Reset settings.
  4. Review the info then tap RESET SETTINGS.
  5. If presented, enter the current PIN, password, or pattern.
  6. To confirm, review the info then tap RESET SETTINGS.

Should the problem continue after this, then do the next two procedures. It’s now time to go after the firmware itself.

Wipe cache partition

This will delete all system caches. It’s also important that you do this procedure because corrupt caches may also cause apps to crash. For this, you don’t have to do anything as none of your files and data will be deleted. Just wipe the cache partition and your phone will do the rest:

  1. Turn your Galaxy Note 8 off.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Open the camera when it’s ready and if the error still shows up, a reset is necessary.

Perform the Master Reset

If the problem is with the software, then a reset will take care of it. However, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted during the process. After making the backup, disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your google account so that you won’t be locked out after the reset.

Once everything is ready, follow these steps to do the Master Reset:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy Note 8.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If everything else fails, it’s time to bring the phone to the service center and have it checked. Should you have other concerns you want us to address, feel free to contact us anytime.
