A power issue like this is not uncommon to android users and one of the key factors that this is happening is when the system crashes. Meaning, this problem mostly occurs if the firmware and other services are not functioning properly that will result to the performance of the phone becoming unstable.

There’s one solution that we know that can fix this problem and that’s the Forced Restart. To do this, press and hold the Volume Down and the Power keys simultaneously for 10 seconds. Assuming the problem is due to a system crash, your phone may boot up normally after you did the procedure.

If the phone won’t respond, try it a few more times to make sure you’re doing it right. You may also try pressing and holding the Volume Down button first and without letting go of it, press and hold the Power key and keep them held together for 10 seconds.

If this doesn’t fix the problem, then it’s more than just a system crash. Try to troubleshoot your device from here on out.

How to troubleshoot Galaxy A5 that won’t turn on

Here are some things you can do to see if you can bring the phone back to life…

Verify it’s not due liquid damage

Just check the USB / charger port for some traces of liquid because it’s where water comes in. but regardless whether there’s moist in there or not, it’s best that you clean it up. Use a cotton swab or insert a small piece of tissue paper to absorb the moist.

You also need to check the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) to see if it’s tripped or not. Remove the SIM card tray and look into the SIM slot to find the LDI. If it’s white, then there’s no water damage but if it turned red, pink or purple, then it’s clear that it’s liquid damage that caused the problem. Bring the phone to the service center so the tech can clean the device up for you.

Charge your Galaxy A5 to see how it responds

It’s possible that the battery got drained and a few seconds before the power got cut off, the system may have crashed, thus, leaving your phone with a black screen and unresponsive buttons.

Plug your charger to a working wall outlet and connect your device to it using the original cable. Regardless whether the phone shows the charging symbol or not, leave it plugged in for at least ten minutes. After which, try turning on the phone and if it still won’t respond, do the Forced Restart once again but this time while the phone is plugged in. If it still won’t respond, then you have to try the next procedures just to know if the phone is still capable of powering up its hardware.

Restart your phone in Safe Mode

If the device is charging but unable to turn on there is a chance that a rogue app is manipulating the system and triggered the issue. It’s time to try to run your phone up in Safe mode to see if it boots up in that environment. This is how you do that…

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If it boots up successfully, then there’s a third-party apps that’s causing the problem, find that app and uninstall it…

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

However, if your device cannot start in Safe mode, you should try doing the next step.

Attempt to boot in Recovery mode

Through recovery mode, the hardware components will be powered up without loading the android interface. In other words, if your phone doesn’t have a hardware issue, then it will normally boot up once you restart it in this mode. If the procedure is successful and your device turned on we suggest you to wipe the cache partition to be sure that all the system caches will be deleted and replaced and this is how you do that…

  1. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  2. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  5. Press the Power key to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

At this point, you can consider the problem as fixed since the phone actually started up in this mode. After wiping the cache partition and the phone has issues booting up, then you should proceed to doing the Master reset…

  1. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  2. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  3. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  4. Press Power button to select.
  5. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  6. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  7. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.
