Difference Between Fitbit Alta and Alta HR

Fitness tracks are an excellent way to monitor your activity throughout the day. They were a little rough around the edges when they first launched; however, Fitbit over years, and with many renditions, seems to have perfected the formula in their devices. Not only do they offer you great inter connectivity between apps that you already use on a daily basis, but the fitness trackers themselves — such as the Alta and the Alta HR — have such great precision that they’re able to actively monitor steps, pulse, heart rate, and so much more. If you’re looking for a way to track those things and more — such as calories burned throughout the day — the Alta and the Alta HR are an excellent way to do so.

Fitbit Alta

The Fitbit Alta is similar to the newer, upgraded Alta HR in a lot of ways. The big difference with the original Alta is that you aren’t going to get a heart rate sensor on it — that means you’re not going to be able to easily watch or monitor data in regards to your heart rate.

The Alta still has the OLED screen on it, which provides you with this vivid colors and deep blacks; however, one area that’s also pretty different is that the Fitbit Alta only has five days of battery life, whereas the Alta HR has a whole seven. You can still juice up with just a couple hours on the charger, but it just won’t last you nearly as long.

Those are really the only two major differences between the Alta and the Alta HR, except for maybe some design improvements. You still get the same all-day fitness tracking, measuring calories burned, steps taken, how well your sleep was, and much more.

Fitbit Alta HR

As you might’ve already caught on, the Fitbit Alta HR is an upgraded version of the original Fitbit Alta version. The biggest addition that comes to the Fitbit Alta HR is the inclusion of the heart-rate sensor. You’ll be able to easily monitor the hear rate all-day, and especially during times of physical activity. Alta HR battery life is about standard for the Alta fitness tracker — a full charge will get you about a straight seven days of life before needing to juice it up again. It only takes a couple of hours to juice it up again, but the biggest problem with it is that, even in the Alta HR upgraded model, competitors tout battery life that is almost double of what the Alta HR is capable of.

Being a fitness tracker, the Alta HR can easily handle rough environments and elements that would be otherwise considered as bad for electronics — such as rain, splashes of water, and even sweat. One of the highlights of the Alta HR, like the original Alta, is that you can connect it up to your computer and sync the data with a log or activity monitor of your choice.

Keep in mind that the Alta HR is able to notify you of phone calls and text messages when paired up to your smartphone as well. This makes it easy to monitor who’s trying to get in touch with you while on an intense jog, run, or session at the gym.

The Alta HR also has an OLED display — this helps with battery life overall, but also gives you more screen clarity. You get more vivid colors over all, as well as deeper blacks. The Alta HR is still fairly pricey as far as fitness trackers go, costing you a whole $150 brand new.

Verdict

As you can see, both the Alta and the Alta HR are fairly similar devices as far as Fitbit fitness trackers go. That said, the Alta HR is obviously the upgraded version. If you’re having trouble deciding between the two, the Alta HR is definitely the way to go. Adding that heart rate sensor into the mix just brings so much extra functionality and usefulness that wasn’t before available in the Alta. And, it really doesn’t come at that much higher of a price point either.
