Android Messages Keeps Crashing? Try These Fixes

If the Google Messages app keeps closing on your Android phone, the cause is usually a temporary app glitch, outdated app build, or corrupted cache. Follow the methods below in order to stabilize the app and restore normal texting.

Method 1: Force Stop Messages and Reopen It

This refreshes the app process and clears minor runtime bugs. It is the fastest first step when Messages keeps crashing right after launch.

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
  3. Find and tap Messages (Google Messages).
  4. Tap Force stop.
  5. Confirm by tapping OK.
  6. Open Messages again and test sending a text.

Method 2: Clear Messages App Cache

Cache files can become corrupted after updates or long use. Clearing cache removes bad temporary data without deleting your conversations.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Tap Storage & cache.
  4. Tap Clear cache.
  5. Reopen Messages.
  6. Check if the app still crashes.

Method 3: Update Google Messages in Play Store

An outdated app version may conflict with newer Android builds. Updating installs bug fixes and compatibility patches.

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Google Messages.
  3. Tap Update if the button appears.
  4. Wait for the installation to complete.
  5. Restart your phone.
  6. Launch Messages and test again.

Method 4: Update Android System Software

System updates often include modem and framework fixes that affect messaging stability. Installing pending updates can resolve recurring app crashes.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Software update (or System > System update).
  3. Tap Download and install (or Check for updates).
  4. Install any available update.
  5. Restart the device after update completion.
  6. Open Messages and verify performance.

Method 5: Clear Messages App Data

This resets Messages to default and removes corrupted local app files. Use this if clearing cache did not fix the issue.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
  2. Tap Storage & cache.
  3. Tap Clear storage or Clear data.
  4. Confirm the reset.
  5. Reopen Messages and complete initial setup if prompted.
  6. Send a test SMS and monitor for crashes.

Method 6: Reinstall Google Messages

Reinstalling replaces damaged app components and restores a clean install. This is useful when crashes continue after resets and updates.

  1. Open Play Store and search Google Messages.
  2. Tap Uninstall (or Uninstall updates for preinstalled app).
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Return to Play Store and tap Install or Update.
  5. Open Messages.
  6. Set it as default SMS app if prompted, then test.

  1. After clearing cache it didn’t resolve the issue. Will deleting data actually delete entire text threads, images in those texts etc??

  2. Thank you!! Your recommendations are the ONLY ones I found that worked!
    Appreciate your work!
